Brasilia – During a meeting with industry businessmen yesterday morning in Brasilia, President Jair Bolsonaro said that, for him, Brazil would adopt vertical isolation. He cited Sweden as an example, but did not mention that the Scandinavian country has more covid-19 deaths than its neighbors, which have adopted the strictest isolation.

With 10 million inhabitants, Sweden exceeded 3,000 dead a week ago on May 7. Brazil, with a population 21 times higher, registered at that time three times the number of deaths on the same date. In other words, in mathematical terms, the mortality rate of the total population in Sweden is approximately seven times higher than in Brazil. The comparison does not take into account underreporting in the countries.

And the numbers keep going up. As of yesterday, Sweden has recorded 28,582 confirmed cases and 3,529 deaths. For every million inhabitants, the Nordic country has 2,830 cases and 349 deaths. If compared to Brazil, making the same count, the numbers are much lower: 923 cases and 64 deaths for every million inhabitants.
