President Jair Bolsonaro (without a party) affirmed on Monday night (5), in adoration to the Ministry of the Assembly of God of Belém, in São Paulo, that he will appoint an evangelical pastor for the next vacancy in the Supreme Court (STF). The promise refers to the position that will remain vacant with the mandatory retirement of Minister Marco Aurélio Mello, who will be 75 years old in July of next year.
“The second wave […], certainly, more than terribly evangelical, God willing we will have a pastor inside ”, declared the president. Then he invited the faithful to imagine the sessions “of that Supreme Federal Court” beginning with a prayer.
On Thursday (1), Bolsonaro made official the appointment of judge Kassio Nunes Marques, of the Federal Regional Court of Region I (TRF-1), for the vacancy that will open with the retirement of Minister Celso de Mello, scheduled for 13 of October. .
As soon as the name came to light as a “supreme”, Bolsonaro began to suffer attacks from various segments of the Bolsonar base, who accused him of treason for referring to the Court a judge known for having good contact with the governor of Piauí , Wellington Dias (PT), and with leaders from Centrão, such as Senator Ciro Nogueira (Progressistas-PI).
“Some, a bit hasty, thought it should be the first wave, which I have just pointed out,” said the president, who has been uncomfortable with the attacks of his choice.
Before, to the fans leaving the Palácio da Alvorada, he said that the nominations to the Supreme Court are, for many, “equal to climbing the Brazilian team” and that “they all have their name.” The executive president stressed that the judge is “Catholic and has some experience in the military” and also responded to criticism that the judge has connections with the Workers’ Party in the past.
Before making the promise to appoint an evangelical pastor to the Supreme Court, Bolsonaro addressed the Minister of Education, Milton Ribeiro, also present at the celebration, and asked him: “Who would have thought that we would have a pastor in charge of the education in Brazil? ”.
This Monday’s service was a tribute to the 86th birthday of Pastor José Wellington Bezerra da Costa, president of the Ministry of the Assembly of God of Belém. In addition to Ribeiro, there are authorities such as the Minister of Women, Family and Human Rights, Damares Alves, the Mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas (PSDB), and former Minister Gilberto Kassab (PSD).
Bolsonaro’s participation in the cult came a few hours after the president publicly declared his support for the candidacy of federal deputy Celso Russomanno (Republicans-SP) in the dispute over the City of São Paulo.
