In live broadcast on social network, the president Jair bolsonaro commented on Thursday 31 that Brazil can buy doses of the vaccine against COVID-19 developed by the North American company Moderna. He did not address the details of how the deal could be finalized.
The president cited a scientific article published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine, which points to 94% effectiveness of the immunizer, the same previously announced by the biotech company. He also commented on the start of vaccination in countries such as the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom, but did not address when this type of action will begin in the country.
“Besides Pfizer, we have another one that is already available, Moderna, which could be acquired by Brazil,” he said.
Developed in partnership with the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (Niad), Moderna’s vaccine has been licensed for use in the United States since December 18 and in Canada. It can be stored in refrigerators for a month and, if frozen, up to six months.
In early December, Moderna said it expects to deliver up to 125 million doses in the first quarter of 2021, the majority (85 million to 100 million) of which will go to the United States. The country has an agreement with the company to supply 200 million doses, enough to immunize 100 million Americans.
Live, Bolsonaro also stressed that he maintains daily contact with the Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, about the pandemic in the country. He also said that vaccination against the new coronavirus will not be mandatory, but voluntary, stating that he will not take the immunizer because he has already been infected with the disease.
“Part of the population asks for them. So whoever wants the vaccine, we’ll do it right. For our part, it is free and not compulsory ”, he declared.
In addition, among other issues, he complained that the price of syringes is higher in the pandemic. A recent attempt to purchase syringes and needles by the Ministry of Health failed, in which, of the 331 million units planned, only 7.9 million were offered in an electronic auction held on Tuesday 29. The figure corresponds to about 2 , 4% of the total units that the portfolio wanted to buy.
