Bolsonaro on vaccine: ‘If I have a side effect or a problem they will not be able to charge me’

BRAZILIA – President Jair Bolsonaro spoke again on Wednesday about vaccination against Covid-19, saying he could not be charged if there was a side effect or “a problem.” Raising doubts about immunization even before the approval of any product in Brazil by the National Sanitary Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), he said that he will show “the complete contract” when buying a vaccine from a company. Meanwhile, the UK and Russia announce the start of mass vaccination next week.

The matter arose during the president’s conversation with supporters upon his arrival at the Palácio da Alvorada in the early afternoon, in which he reinforced his criticism of the detention measures adopted by city councils and state governments. He said it was “logical” that there should be concern about the virus and “wait for a vaccine” when he mentioned his reservations:

– Each company has its vaccine. Let us suppose that in one of the clauses of the vaccine that I am going to buy we will have to see what they offer. Suppose the following is written in the middle: we release any refund, any liability with possible immediate or future side effects. So are you going to get this vaccine? Because, upon arrival, there is this conclusion … because some countries have begun to vaccinate … I will show you the complete contract. Whoever takes it will know what they are taking and hence the consequences, declared the president.

Bolsonaro then added:

– If you have any side effects or problems, you know that they will not charge me. Because I’m going to be very clear, “this is the vaccine.”

Diagnosed with Covid-19 in July, Bolsonaro said that, having contracted the virus, he is already “vaccinated.” He had already said, in recent days, that he would not receive any vaccine against the disease.
