Last Tuesday (2), the president Jair bolsonaro (without party) announced that he would send a delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ernesto Araújo, Israel, to learn about the EXO-CD24 nasal spray, a drug that began to be tested in the treatment against COVID-19 which does not yet have data of proven efficacy.
However, this Saturday (6), Bolsonaro changed his speech and announced, in a video posted on social networks, that the trip is a cooperative mission between the two countries to treat drugs and vaccines, not to mention the nasal spray that does not has proven efficacy against Covid-19.
“The purpose of this trip is more than an exchange. We are looking for protocols, agreements in the area of science and technology ”, said the president.
Bolsonaro was with members of the delegation that will go to Israel, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ernesto Araújo, and the Secretary of Research and Scientific Training of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Marcelo Moraeles, who provided more details about the objective of the travel.
“The objective of this mission is for us to take in this cooperation agreement with Israel the entire area of science and technology, and health, which we are developing in the country and Israel, to make this cooperation agreement in various areas of knowledge. Including drugs and vaccines that we are developing in the ‘Virus Network’ of the Ministry of Science and Technology and also in the Ministry of Health ”, said Morales.
Bolsonaro still says there is a Brazilian vaccine in development that the delegation is taking to Israel, and Morales comments on it. “There are 15 different vaccines and three have reached a degree of maturity that can begin clinical trials in patients next month. One of them has already joined Anvisa [Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária]”.
Morales also explains that the advantage is that “if we have a mutation in Brazil, we have mastered the technology and we can quickly change the vaccine by adapting to the new mutation.”
UOL consulted Anvisa about Morales’ speech, but the agency denied the information. According to the agency, it maintains contact with research centers at the UFMG, UFRJ and USP universities, the latter in partnership with a US laboratory. Also according to UOL, Anvisa says that all the analyzes are in the preclinical phase, with tests on animals. There were no requests for studies in people.
“Anvisa has not received any formal application for authorization of studies in Brazil for these three vaccines,” said the agency’s advisor.
Worst phase of the pandemic
This week, which recorded the worst numbers for Covid-19, the president stated that it is necessary to “face the problem with an open chest” and stop “freshness” and “mimimi”. The number of deaths from Covid-19 in Brazil exceeded 1,700 for the fourth consecutive day, reaching 1,760 victims this Friday (5), according to data collected by the media consortium.
