President Jair Bolsonaro said Thursday (14) that he is ready to speak to governors about measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic. He called on states to review social isolation strategies.

Bolsonaro spoke to journalists outside the Palácio da Alvorada’s official residence. He returned to defend the resumption of economic activities that are paralyzed due to the pandemic.

“I appeal to the governors. Review this policy. Am I ready to speak? Are we going to preserve life? Come on. But that way, the price ahead will be hundreds of lives more that we will lose due to these absurd measures to close everything. “said the president.

Since the first records in the country of covid-19, a disease caused by the virus, Bolsonaro has adopted a position of confrontation with the governors. The president has always criticized the social isolation measures adopted by the states in accordance with the recommendations of health authorities, such as the World Health Organization (WHO).

The clashes took place mainly with the governor João Doria (PSDB), from São Paulo, and Wilson Witzel (PSC), from Rio de Janeiro. Bolsonaro accuses them both of taking advantage of the political advantages of the crisis to weaken the federal government.

This week Bolsonaro criticized the governors who did not want to follow the decree, signed by him, which includes beauty salons, hairdressers and gyms among the essential activities in the pandemic. Most states and the Federal District understood that relaxation would worsen the spread of the virus.

Commenting on the case, Bolsonaro said that not following the decree would be “authoritarianism.” However, the Supreme Federal Court (STF) has already recognized that the competence to define isolation measures belongs to the states.

Upon leaving Alvorada, Bolsonaro also said that he regrets the deaths caused by covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, but argued that there will be more deaths if the isolation measures are maintained.

“We have to have the courage to face the virus. Are people dying? Yes! Sorry! But it will die much, much, much more if the economy continues to be destroyed by these measures,” said the president.

Bolsonaro also criticized the so-called confinement (stricter version of social isolation) that was adopted by some cities in the country. According to experts, it is the most effective measure to stop contagion out of control.

“This story of confinement, they will close everything, this is not the way. This is the way of failure, [vai] break Brazil Governor, mayor, who maybe got into this wave over there, do what I’ve done in my life: apologize and do the right thing, “said the president.

Around the world, countries that have adopted stricter isolation measures have managed to avoid an increase in covid-19 cases. In countries where the measures took longer to take, such as Italy and the United States, the number of cases and deaths is much higher.
