Dozens of supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro (without party) toured this Saturday afternoon on the streets of São Paulo to show their support in leading the covid-19 crisis and criticized Rede Globo, TV Bandeirantes, China and the Governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB). The protest was called by WhatsApp and its point of greatest adherence was at the beginning of the night, when Avenida Paulista had congested traffic in one of the directions.

The demonstration began in front of the Ibirapuera gym, which will house the city’s third field hospital. A man in the back of a truck made a speech asking people not to watch these two stations and boycott any brand that advertised on these channels. He also accused China of financing television networks in association with Doria.

Nearby, truckers parked their vehicles next to the Legislative Assembly and an “outside Doria” choir was installed. The Governor of São Paulo and Rede Globo were the main targets of the caravan and called them “traitors to the homeland”. The demonstration also featured dozens of cars and motorcycles with Brazilian flags. The speeches had familiar phrases from the president’s supporters like “my flag will never be red.”

Doria stood out as one of the governors who, following the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and even the Bolsonaro Ministry of Health, imposed measures such as closing stores and schools to try to slow the progress of the new coronavirus. The Governor of São Paulo decreed and then extended a quarantine.

The protesters went to Avenida Paulista and from there they went to the headquarters of TV Globo in the capital of São Paulo, where the protest reached its peak. At least 200 people were on the scene and most got out of the car. Choirs were repeated calling the announcer a traitor to the homeland, which were interspersed with criticism of Governor João Doria.

Among the protesters was businessman Cleyson Lombardi, 47, who claims to respect quarantine, but says people need to work. “It depends on the trade and my movement has dropped 80%.” He transports motorcycles to workshops and shops and works alone. “What you save is working capital money, but I’m on the edge.”

The military police crossed their vehicles three blocks down the street from Doria’s house, which is located in the Jardins neighborhood. They blocked access to the residence to prevent the caravan from entering the residence.

But the protesters had another destination and went to the headquarters of Fiesp (Federation of Industries of São Paulo), located on Avenida Paulista. They did not want to complain about the performance of entrepreneurs in the covid-19 crisis, but they sought the visibility of the best-known address in São Paulo.

Like President Bolsonaro, the protesters oppose the social isolation measures and argue that the economic impact will be severe. Some cars had placards calling for the departure of João Doria, considered a traitor for being elected by sticking his image to that of the president in the 2018 elections. This was the case for helicopter pilot Paulo Euzébio, 51.

“I voted for Doria. He made the best promises and joined Bolsonaro, clung to Bolsonaro. But Doria betrayed the president and São Paulo. He saw the disease as an opportunity to gain electoral benefit,” says Paulo.

The pilot cited the example of chloroquine. He complained that the president always defended the use of the drug in the fight against the coronavirus and when many began to join the cause, the governor of São Paulo said that the idea came from his team.

“He is focused on winning the Presidency and he is showing all the falsehood. But he will fall off the donkey.”

Locksmith Reginaldo Teixeira Rossi, 58, said he was disgusted by the obligation to stay home. The São Paulo governor’s decision not to comply with the president’s opinion was also considered treason and a motive for impeachment.

Regarding Rede Globo, he stated that he removed the station from his TV tuning two years ago. Reginaldo considers that the channel is a disseminator of lies with false reports that seek to destabilize the president.

The São Paulo government sent a note stating that “it respects the right to free expression of all those who wish to participate in demonstrations in the state.” However, the statement emphasizes that “it is important to reinforce that social isolation is essential to reduce the cases and deaths of COVID-19, according to the recommendation of the WHO (World Health Organization) and the Ministry of Health.”

The military police accompanied the caravan throughout the afternoon and at no time asked the drivers to disperse, even if the demonstration did not respect quarantine. He Twitter He sent a question to the corporation, but received no response.

Rede Globo was also contacted and is evaluating whether it will respond. If any pronouncement occurs, it will be included in this matter.

Brazil has 20,727 official cases of the disease and 1,124 deaths.
