This afternoon, members of the Fire Department found fragments of a body, one year and eight months after the explosion of the Brumadinho dam (MG). The accident killed 259 people; 11 others are still missing.

The body was found 2.4 km from the place where the breach occurred, during the search operation carried out by 59 soldiers and 128 machines. However, there is no information on whether the found body belongs to any of the victims who are still missing.

“Firefighters teams found an important part of a body, which may result in the identification of one of the victims not yet located,” explained Josías Soares de Freitas Junior, Search Operations commander.

At the beginning of September, the teams had already found, in the same region, called “Esperança II”, the truck of the company “Fugro Íngeo”.

The Brumadinho Dam exploded on January 25, 2019, killing 270 people; 259 bodies have already been recovered. The searches, which began immediately, were halted on March 21 this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but were back online in August.

The Brumadinho tragedy is considered the second great tragedy in three years. On November 5, 2015, the Samarco dam in Mariana, also in Minas, broke, killing 19. The Bento Rodrigues district was destroyed. The mud that descended reached Rio Doce and Espírito Santo.
