The Democratic candidate for the presidency of the United States, Joe Biden, voted early this Wednesday (28) in the city where he lives, Wilmington, Delaware. Six days before the election, he went to the polling place with his wife Jill.

“We just voted,” Biden said on the steps of the Carvel State Office Building, the administrative headquarters of the regional government.

The official election date is November 3, but at least 74 million Americans have already voted early, estimates the “Elections Project” at the University of Florida. The number now exceeds half of the total votes in the 2016 election.

President Donald Trump, who is seeking reelection, also cast his vote late last week in Florida.

Unlike in Brazil, voting is not mandatory in the United States and there voters can also choose the candidate before the official election date, including sending the ballot by mail. The country uses paper invoices.

The record early voting comes amid a new wave of Covid cases in the country. The United States registered a record 500,000 infected in a week, and the pandemic has been the main theme of the electoral campaign.

The country is responsible for almost 20% of all infections and deaths in the world. The United States has 8.8 million confirmed cases and 226,000 deaths to date. Worldwide, there are 44 million infected and more than 1.1 million deaths.

Due to the pandemic, many states have changed voting rules, allowing millions of people to vote by mail for the first time. Experts predict that the record of 150 million votes could be broken and the turnout rate in the elections is expected to be the highest since 1908.

Democrats have up-voted more than Republicans. In the 19 states that register party affiliation of voters, 48% of those who have already voted were Democrats, 29% were Republicans, and 23% are partyless or of inferior acronyms contesting the election.

But that gap has been narrowing in recent days, and polls show Democrats vote earlier and Republicans prefer to go to the polls on Election Day.
