The São Paulo government announced that it intends to start immunization against covid-19 in January, when the CoronaVac vaccine will begin to be applied in the state.
The immunizer is being developed in Brazil by the Chinese company Sinovac, its manufacturer, in association with the Butantan Institute, linked to the São Paulo government.
CoronaVac’s effectiveness tests have not yet been completed, but the expectation is that this will happen with the Brazilian research arm until the next day 15.
The São Paulo government hopes that it will then be possible to request registration from the National Surveillance Agency (Anvisa).
The agreement with Sinovac provides for the purchase of 46 million doses and the transfer of technology to Butantan.
Sinovac says it currently has the capacity to make 300 million doses a year.
But the company announced that it should complete a second production unit by the end of 2020 to increase its capacity to 600 million doses per year.
Sinovac said it will receive an investment of R $ 500 million (R $ 2.56 billion) to promote the development and production of the vaccine.
The money will come from Chinese conglomerate Sino Biopharmaceutical Limited, which acquired 15% of Sinovac Life Sciences, a subsidiary of Sinovac.
The agreement was closed in view of the negotiations for the supply of the vaccine not only to Brazil, but with other countries.
Please understand below where the Sinovac vaccine is already being used or where it can be given soon.
China
The Sinovac vaccine has not yet been officially registered in China, but it is already being applied, on an emergency use regimen.
Chinese government officials, such as health professionals and border teams, are being immunized.
CoronaVac is one of the three vaccines used for this purpose.
The emergency use program was approved by the Chinese authorities in July and officially announced the following month.
In November, one of the manufacturers of the used immunizers, Sinopharm, said that its company had already vaccinated 1 million people with no reports of serious adverse effects, as reported in the journal Nature.
This raised concern among vaccine experts, which was followed by a series of reports in state vehicles that reinforce that it was an effort focused on small groups of the population that are more exposed to the virus.
But there is mounting evidence that vaccines are available to anyone who can afford them, as the BBC showed, which caught hundreds of people in a line outside a hospital in Yiwu city waiting to be immunized for $ 60,308.
The report was unable to identify which vaccine was offered to the public at the time.
China is the country where the pandemic began. The first signs of the coronavirus were detected late last year.
But the country halted its spread with highly restrictive social isolation measures, which prevented tens of millions of people from taking to the streets.
The country still has 93,600 confirmed cases and 4,746 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Indonesia
Last Sunday (06/11), the country received the first batch of CoronaVac, with 1.2 million doses. The vaccine was tested in the country.
Vaccination will begin in December, free of charge, and priority will be given to professionals who are at the forefront in the fight against the pandemic, such as health professionals, police, military and public officials.
Then, citizens between the ages of 18 and 59 will be immunized, requiring a total of 246 million doses.
The agreement with Sinovac provides for the shipment of raw materials for the local production of the vaccine. The state pharmaceutical company PT Bio Farma will be in charge of manufacturing 45 million doses.
The Indonesian government has agreements with at least three other providers of COVID-19 vaccines, including AstraZeneca / Oxford, which closed an agreement with the Brazilian government.
Indonesia is to date the 20th country in number of cases in the world, with more than 580 thousand, and the most affected in Southeast Asia.
In deaths, it ranks 17th, with 17,867 confirmed deaths so far, according to Johns Hopkins.
Turkey
The government has announced plans to begin applying CoronaVac to its citizens later this month, according to the Associated Press.
The local Health Ministry signed an agreement with Sinovac to supply 50 million doses. Turkey has 83 million inhabitants.
The vaccine has not yet been officially approved in the country, but according to the Turkish government, an authorization for its early use will be granted if the country’s laboratories confirm that CoronaVac is safe.
The preliminary results of the CoronaVac tests that are being carried out in the country will also be reviewed.
Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said he expected 10-20 million doses to be administered this month. The first shipment is expected to arrive in the country next Friday (11/12).
Another 20 million are expected in January and another 10 million in February.
Immunization should be done in four stages. The first provides for the immunization of health professionals and the elderly.
Then, essential professionals and people over 50 with at least one chronic disease.
The third stage will be for people under the age of 50 who have at least one chronic illness, young adults, and other workers. The last phase will cover the rest of the population.
CoronaVac will be offered free of charge, President Recep Erdogan said, but other covid-19 vaccines will be sold in pharmacies.
Turkey today has the 16th highest number of cases in the world, with 860,400, and the 20th in deaths, with 15,103, according to Johns Hopkins
Chile
The Chilean government announced in late September that it had approved CoronaVac studies in the country, with the participation of 3,000 volunteers.
Vaccines developed by the pharmaceutical company Jansen, Johnson & Johnson’s drug division and AstraZeneca / Oxford are also being tested in Chile.
The country’s government also closed an agreement with Sinovac to supply 20 million doses of the Chinese vaccine. Chile has 19 million inhabitants.
“The use of a vaccine requires the approval of a qualified body, such as the Chilean Institute of Public Health or the National Agency for Sanitary Surveillance (Anvisa) in Brazil. We hope that Anvisa will soon approve the vaccine so that we can also make and start using it. in Chile, ”the Chilean government said in a statement.
Currently, the Institute of Public Health, the Chilean equivalent of Anvisa, is already evaluating an emergency use request for the Pfizer vaccine, with which the Chilean government has reached an agreement to supply 10 million doses.
The expectation is that the first batch will arrive in the country in the first quarter of 2021. In the same period, the government intends to start immunizing 15.2 million people.
Health professionals, workers in the transportation sector and members of the Armed Forces and security forces will be prioritized in the first stage, the Ministry of Health reported.
