Bahía wasted no time finding a replacement for Roger Machado, who was fired last Wednesday after a 5-3 loss to Flamengo. In an interview with Globo Esporte on Thursday, tricolor president Guilherme Bellintani said he has advanced conversations with two coaches. One is Brazilian and the other from outside the country.

According to Bellintani, the most favorable scenario is that of the Brazilian coach. The foreign technician would be afraid of the public health situation in Brazil, which has already exceeded the 120,000 mark for deaths caused by the new coronavirus. The tricolor president denied that the professional from outside the country is the Argentine Gabriel Heinze, ex-Vélez Sarsfield, or the Uruguayan Diego Aguirre, who has worked in São Paulo, Internacional and Atlético-MG.

– We have two shoots today, right now. One focus is a Brazilian coach and one focus is a foreign coach. With more difficulty for the foreigner, for the moment of the country, which is resisting because of the Covid issue, the coaches from outside are resisting. So there is a trend for a national coach, although today we have studied and talked with an external coach. He was open, interested, but a little scared, due to the public health circumstances in the country. But it is a process that we are doing calmly, quickly, of course. But that speed does not mean a bad choice, since we want to bring someone to have a little more life in the club.

Bellintani stated that he cannot reveal the name of the foreign coach, but stressed that he is a professional who was already under observation.

– I can not. He’s a coach we’ve been looking at for a long time. His coming is very difficult, but we also have advanced conversations with a Brazilian coach that we also like.

With the technician position vacant, several speculations emerged this Thursday morning. Names such as coach Luís Felipe Scolari were linked to the Tricolor, although the experienced coach has a different profile than Roger Machado. Bellintani said that Bahia does not work only with a professional profile, but did not name the five-time world champion by name.

– We have different profiles. You don’t have a specific profile. The market is very closed, without many options. There is, in a way … The Brazilian coach market is migrating from one generation to another. Whereas an older, winning generation is somehow coming out of the closet. As in all markets, the younger generation still does not have enough baggage and achievements to somehow guarantee a job. This moment in the market makes it difficult for us, but at the same time we have our lights, which we understand can work in Bahia at this time with the cast we have. This does not depend on being a younger and older coach. What we’re really looking for is, given the cast we have, a gaming profile. And the alternatives we have in the market. Based on that, we will make our choice.

In six games with Roger Machado at Brasileirão, Bahia won eight points. The start of the competition weighed on the assessment for the dismissal of Roger Machado. Tricolor is currently ranked 12th in the rankings.

– We know that the coach evaluation process, and Bahia has implemented it, is continuous. It is a cycle. We have avoided evaluating at the most critical moments. I will cite as an example the end of the second round of the Brazilian Championship last year or the elimination of the Copa do Brasil or the impossibility of winning the Copa do Nordeste. They were very difficult moments, but we believed that there was a way out, a process of possible evolution. In these first six rounds of the Brazilian Championship we came to the conclusion that evolution was not coming and, from there, we opted for change. Always a continuous evaluation process, avoiding specific evaluations, but understanding that sometimes change is necessary – explained the tricolor president.

Bahía will play again on Sunday, at 4:00 p.m. (Brasilia time), against Internacional, in Beira-Rio. Tricolor is coming off four winless rounds, while Colorado leads Serie A with four unbeaten games.
