Bahía began, last Monday, an internal investigation process for the accusation of racial injury of the Gerson midfielder, from Flamengo, against the Colombian midfielder Juan Pablo Ramírez. The flamenco player claims to have heard from Ramírez the phrase “Shut up, black” at the beginning of the second part of the match played last Sunday at the Maracana.

In an interview with Globo Esporte on Tuesday (look up), the president of Bahia, Guilherme Bellintani, detailed the investigation process carried out by the club. The coach also pointed out that he listened to Ramírez and gave the athlete the right to tell his own version of what happened. The midfielder recorded a video last Monday night and defended himself against the accusation.

– It started with my conversation with Índio Ramírez, Gerson and other athletes. We asked for images of the match, we had access to the minutes. We receive images of the game, with seven cameras. We are talking to many people. We are also supporting Índio Ramírez and giving the right to the adversary. Understanding that this is not an inquisition court, but we must determine Bellintani said.

Bahia opted for the removal of Ramírez on Sunday night. According to Bellintani, the athlete has been accompanied by club psychologists. The president affirmed that he does not see any problem for the athlete to continue wearing the tricolor shirt if it is found that there was no racial injury against Gerson.

– Of course, I see conditions because we are investigating. If he didn’t, he would be doing a preliminary inquisition. But first we have to conclude the investigations, understand the facts. I have no doubt that Gerson heard what he said he heard. The question is whether Ramírez said that. Gerson wouldn’t lie, the victim’s voice is predominant. I will never doubt the victim. What we are investigating is whether Ramírez spoke, because he could have said something else. I repeat: hard, firm investigation, the matter is very serious.

Bellintani also evaluated Bahia’s position on Gerson’s racial injury charge. The president recalled the history of affirmative actions developed by the club and pointed out that it is necessary to advance more in anti-racist agendas.

– First talk about what we have done in recent years. Bahía is the forerunner of the anti-racist policy. Destiny wanted the club to have a complaint of this dimension. We need to go further. What we did was little in the face of an anti-racist struggle. My head is very steady on purpose. I don’t want to present the case as the only time to fight racism. It is not just about defining Ramírez’s future, but about using a case like this to show that racism in Brazilian soccer is recurrent. Bahía’s mission is to follow the work that was being done.

In the summary of the match, the referee Flávio Rodrigues de Souza declared that he did not witness the event described by Gerson. The Office of the Prosecutor of the Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) will analyze the summary of the game and the video of the game to verify how to act in the case. There is still no definition of what will be done by the Prosecutor’s Office, which can request other evidence if it deems it necessary.

The Racial Crimes and Intolerance Crimes Commission summoned Ramírez, coach Mano Menezes and referee Flavio Rodrigues de Souza, responsible for directing Flamengo 4 x 3 Bahía. This Tuesday, Gerson gave testimony about the complaint.
