In a solemn ceremony in Assisi, in central Italy, the Catholic Church will beatify this Saturday (10) the young Italian Carlo Acutis, a computer genius, who will become the first “influencer” in religious matters to reach the altars.
Acutis, who died at the age of 15 in 2006 from leukemia and whose body remains “intact” with his jeans and sneakers, is considered by Pope Francis as a “bright” and “creative” young man, an example for the new generations.
“It is true that the digital world can expose you to the risk of withdrawal, isolation or empty pleasure. But we must not forget that in this environment there are young people who are also creative and, at times, brilliant ”, wrote the Argentine Pope, using Carlo Acutis as an example.
The official portal of the Holy See, Vatican News, describes the young man as “a normal, handsome and popular boy”, a kind of “natural clown” who made his classmates and teachers laugh.
“All men are born original, but many die as photocopies, don’t let that happen to you!” Recommended his generation Acutis, who managed to reach thousands of people around the world with his young and fresh language.
The blessed future, who loved to play soccer, video games, Nutella and ice cream, dedicated much of his life to virtual catechism and the creation of cyber networks to connect more than 10,000 parishes.
His online writings, with religious content, even inspired the Argentine pope who, in a text, exhorted young people to avoid considering God as “a hard drive.”
Born in London in 1991, Carlo Acutis died in Monza (Milan region) on October 12, 2006.
He was declared “venerable” on July 5, 2018 and almost a year later his remains were transferred to Assisi.
The Church recognized that a miraculous intercession in 2013 by a Brazilian boy interceded in a miracle, which paved the way for beatification, the first step towards becoming a saint, for which two miracles are needed.
The beatification ceremony, which should have been postponed due to the coronavirus epidemic, will be held in Assisi, in the city of San Francisco, and will be broadcast to the whole world.
Internet fanatic and motivated by intense faith, the young man created a page about faith and Eucharistic miracles.
His mother, Antonia Salzano, told the Vatican website that the young man, “with a relatively outdated computer, managed to reach thousands of people on all continents” thanks to his personality and the way in which he communicated his faith.
The bishop of Assisi, Domenico Sorrentino, affirms that the new blessed today has “a similar appeal” to that of Saint Francis of Assisi in his time.
“In Assisi, we are used to the charm of San Francisco, which attracts millions of visitors and many devotees. But that a boy who died at age 15 in 2006 is already so influential is something that can only be explained by supernatural reasons. The attraction that Carlo has is, in a way, similar to that of Francisco de Assis ”, the priest assured the media.
