BRASILIA – The Minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) Luis Roberto Barroso said this Sunday, in an interview with Globonews, that the declaration of the President of the Republic is “worrying”, Jair Bolsonaro, which has the support of the Armed Forces. Appearing in an undemocratic act against the STF, Congress and former Minister Sergio Moro, Bolsonaro declared that he will no longer “admit interference” in his government and that he has reached “the limit.”

– For me personally, I was only concerned with one thing: the statement that the Armed Forces supported the government. And then I think this is a fact that generates a certain degree of concern, because the Armed Forces are State institutions, subordinate to the Constitution and, therefore, not within the government, linked to any government. And therefore, the Armed Forces should not be thrown into retail politics. This is what happened in Venezuela, with the results we have seen, Barroso told Globonews.

On the eve of this Sunday’s event, which included attacks against the Supreme Court and Congress, Bolsonaro had met with the commanders of the Air Force, the Army and the Navy at the Alvorada Palace. Government military ministers, such as Defense Minister Fernando Azevedo, also participated in the meeting.

Despite the disapproval of Bolsonaro’s speech to supporters on Sunday, Barroso said there is no institutional crisis.
– The National Congress rejected the Provisional Measures of the President of the Republic and they ceased to be in force. Therefore, the Constitution has been followed. The Federal Supreme Court issued decisions contrary to the President’s actions and these decisions were observed. And, therefore, the Constitution was complied with, so that, until now, I don’t see any trace of institutional crisis, added the minister.
Barroso argues that he learned to “pay attention to the facts, not the words or the political rhetoric.” He also said that he did not believe in the possibility that military personnel could go beyond the limits of Constitution.
– I doubt that the Armed Forces will lend themselves to this role of entering the political retail trade and the ordinary political debate.
Press criminals are “criminals”
Still at Sunday’s protest, Barroso said Bolsonaro’s supporters are free to express themselves. He condemned, however, the aggression against journalists from the “State of S. Paulo”, expelled from the place with blows and kicks.
– There are no more protesters. They are common criminals against democracy. This is unacceptable.
When asked about Bolsonaro’s irritation caused by a court order of his own, Barroso says he faces criticism “naturally.” The Supreme Minister vetoed the expulsion of Venezuelan diplomats from Brazil because he considered that there was a risk to the health of foreigners in the current circumstances of the coronavirus pandemic. He said that the prerogative to determine the expulsion belongs to the President of the Republic, but he made the reservation:
“No one can commit acts of cruelty,” said Barroso.
The minister, who will preside over the Superior Court Electoral Court (TSE) During the electoral period, he also spoke about the possibility of postponing this year’s municipal elections. Barroso said that any decision in this regard must be made by the National Congress, who is responsible for amending the Constitution. On the other hand, he evaluated that he will speak with the mayors and senators in case there is a delay in the TSE schedule. The surveys, for example, must be tested by the end of June.
– If in June we cannot do the tests, I will look for the mayors of the House and the Senate to expose (the situation) – he explained.
