The president of the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Luís Roberto Barroso, responded on Wednesday (11) to a request from the Regional Electoral Tribunal of Amapá (TRE-AP) and postponed the municipal elections in Macapá, the state capital.
The first round in the whole country is scheduled for this Sunday (15) and the second, for the next 29. Barroso’s decision goes to a referendum, by the plenary session of the TSE, this Thursday (12).
The request for postponement was made this Wednesday by TRE-AP. The court argued that the postponement should take place “until electricity is restored regularly” in the municipality.
The state has faced a crisis in the electricity supply since last week. Municipalities in the region were completely without power after a fire hit the state’s main substation. On Saturday, the neighborhoods of two cities had electricity again.
When analyzing the TRE-AP request, Barroso decided: “After consulting all the other members of the court, I suspend the holding of the municipal elections in Macapá / AP, until the material and technical conditions for holding them are safely reestablished. of the elections. of the population. ”
“I clarify that the suspension covers the forecast for the 1st and 2nd shifts, scheduled for November 15 and 29, respectively, subjecting the appointment of new dates to a subsequent act. I determine that the provisions for the exclusion of the Loading of ballots throughout the municipality, in order to prevent them from coming into operation until now scheduled for 11/15/2020 ”, added the minister in the decision.
In the decision, Barroso clarified that the electoral legislation allows the rescheduling of elections in the event of “factual impossibility of voting” in the polling stations “in a significant number”. According to the minister, it is up to the local electoral court to define the new voting date.
On the 9th, the president of TRE-AP, Judge Rommel Araújo, had stated that the state was able to make the first round on the 15th.
