BRASÍLIA – The president of the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE), Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, once again defended the electronic voting machines. Asked about the statements of President Jair Bolsonaro, who again spoke of fraud and defended the printed vote, Barroso said that if there is any evidence of irregularity, the Court will investigate. But, he said, there has never been evidence of fraud since electronic voting machines began to be used more than 20 years ago. Barroso affirmed that the result obtained represents the will of the Brazilian voters.
– If the president or anyone has any evidence of fraud, I will endeavor to find out. I am a judge and I deal with facts and evidence, that is why I cannot be impressed by the political rhetoric that is part of a game that I do not have to play – said Barroso at a press conference after the votes of the second round of the municipal elections of this year.

The president of the TSE said that Bolsonaro has the right to express himself freely, but stressed that the Federal Supreme Court (STF), of which he is a part, has already ruled out the printed vote.

– The President of the Republic deserves all institutional respect and has the right to express his opinion freely. The country is free and democratic. However, the truth is that the Federal Supreme Court has already understood the unconstitutionality of the printed vote. And not only because of the cost of R $ 2.5 billion, but because it would represent a real risk for the secrecy of the vote. So today objectively there is no possibility of a printed vote because there is a unanimous decision in a different sense – said Barroso.

He believes that the printed vote will bring confusion:
– I think that the printed vote would bring a great stir to the Brazilian electoral process, because every defeated candidate would ask for a recount, there would be challenges, claims of nullity and judicialization of the electoral process. So I consider, here is a personal opinion, I think it would bring a great stir to the electoral process. It is more or less like playing with a winning team.

– There is no possibility of defrauding the system. Now, I have no control over people’s imagination. There are people who think that the earth is flat, there are people who think that man did not reach the moon, there are people who think that Trump won the elections in the United States. This is the image over which I have no power.

The Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, said that there is still no information on persons with jurisdiction suspected of acting against the TSE. According to him, an official letter was sent to the PF requesting that, if suspects in this condition are detected, such as parliamentarians, the PGR be informed to evaluate the appropriate measures.

Barroso said there was no successful hacker attack on the TSE system in the second round. When asked if there was a failed attempt, he said he had no information about it. On November 15, during the first round, there was an unsuccessful attempt to bring down the Court’s website. There was also a leak of data from judicial officials.
The director general of the Federal Police, Rolando Alexandre de Souza, said that the investigation into the hacker’s attack in the first round is still in its infancy and that he could not give more details.
– Those who have suffered searches are called anarchists. But, as a lot of material was collected, the investigation will continue – said the general director of the PF.
