Barack Obama was the interviewee of Conversation with Bial from Monday 16/11. The former president of the United States publishes the first volume of his memoirs, “A promised land”and I spoke with Pedro Bial about the play, his withering political career, the choice of Joe biden and relations between Brazil and the United States. Flávia Barbosa, executive editor of the newspaper O Globo that covered the entire second period of Obama, also participated in the interview.

Obama commented on passages in the book in which he talks about Brazil, such as when he visited Christ the Redeemer with his family, in Rio de Janeiro, shortly after ordering a bomb attack in Libya for the first time. He also remembers when he thwarted their safety to get close to hundreds of children in the City of God.

“Kids in the slums, in Rio, in Chicago or anywhere in the world, they need more than inspiration, they need good schools, jobs when they graduate.”

It highlights that the United States and Brazil have much in common, including a long history of slavery and racial discrimination, and they face the challenge of overcoming inequality.

“I truly believe that the role of my presidency was symbolic. One of my reasons for running was to send the message that any child can aspire to something greater, their horizons are not closed.”
