Perhaps not even the most optimistic of the tricolor imagined the script of the duel between Bahía and Atlético-MG, in Pituaçu. On Monday night (19), the Squad achieved an impressive victory by defeating the Minas Gerais team 3-1.
The goals that guaranteed the victory of Bahia were scored by Daniel and Gilberto, twice, all in the second half. Before, Savarino had scored for Galo, in the first stage.
The result brought Bahia up to 12th place, with 19 points, three more than the first team in the relegation zone (Athletico-PR). Atlético-MG, which started round 17 as the leader, fell to third place, three points behind Internacional and Flamengo.
Bahia’s next match with Brasileirão will be only on the 31st, when they face Santos, in Vila Belmiro. Before that, the team must play the Copa Sudamericana again. The opponent will be known in a draw on Friday (23).
Two different bays
The night were two different bays in Pituaçu. Faced with an opponent who has an intense practice of offensive play, Mano Menezes surprised when he joined the team with four defensive midfielders (Gregore, Edson, Ramón and Elias, who advanced), Ernando on the right wing and the attack formed only by Fessin and Clayson.
The strategy of extreme caution became even clearer when the ball rolled. In theory, the squad expected Atlético and tried to go at full speed, mainly with Fessin. In practice, the duel turned into an attack on the defense, and that’s it. The first part was played practically all within the defense field of the squad. Atlético attacked at great speed on the left with Keno from Bahia; Bahia was closing.
Until one hour the visiting team reached the goal. On the play from above, Réver straightened up inside the area and Savarino filled his foot to put Gallo ahead in the 20th minute.
Even at a disadvantage, Bahia could not react and simply fought back. The balls stretched out by the defense were lost with no one on the offensive field. Meanwhile, Atlético prowled the area and almost reached the second by kicking Jair.
Gilberto decides
The story of the game began to change when Mano remembered that he needed to attack, as the defeat put the team in the relegation zone. He returned from halftime with Gilberto in the space behind the wheel Edson – and up front, he left Clayson for Marco Antônio.
However, the prospect followed suit. Wrinkled in the field of defense, Bahia could barely outrun. At the front, Gilberto was at the mercy of the kicks. Meanwhile, Atlético-MG lowered the intensity a bit, but was about to score the second on two occasions. First with Keno, on a ball that passed drawing ink, and then with Savarino. The Venezuelan forward came face to face with Douglas and kicked him out.
The situation was only good for Bahia after 23 minutes. In one of the rare attacking moves, Daniel threw Elias, who was knocked down at the entrance to the area. Gilberto charged hard, Everson couldn’t hold out and Daniel tied the match for the squad.
The tricolor twist was almost out minutes later. In the counterattack, Gilberto crossed low for Marco Antônio, free, the midfielder finished badly and Everson saved Atlético-MG. Incredible opportunity missed by Bahia.
The pressure on the attack worked. At 34 minutes, Guga backtracked badly and gave Gilberto a gift. The number 9 shot at speed, dribbled to Everson, put Rabello on the ground and scored a great goal, turning the match into Pituaçu.
The night was really Gilberto’s. In a new counterattack, Daniel threw the center forward, who played Everson’s exit with his left foot, scored 3×1 and sealed the victory at 43 ‘of the second half.
