Backstage: why didn’t the FPF accept Palmeiras’ request to postpone a derby? – Perrone’s blog

When discussing Palmeiras’ request to postpone the classic this Wednesday (3), with Corinthians, due to the proximity of the second game of the Copa do Brasil final, the Paulista Federation explained to management the negative impact that a change has . would have on the table Paulistão. The talks took place before the Covid-19 outbreak in Alvinegro.

One of the main supposed effects, the blog found, would be that Abel Ferreira’s team would have to play four games for the state in eight days. That is, with an interval of only 48 hours between each game.

In addition, the FPF assessed that an eventual change would affect the time and planning of five other teams.

In view of all the options evaluated, the São Paulo Federation chose to keep the derby date, arguing that it is the solution that best preserves the interest of all participants in the championship.

The speech of the leaders of the federation behind the scenes is that the organization is aware that keeping the date of the classic, despite the fact that it occurs near the second match of the final of the Copa do Brasil, next Sunday, is not the solution ideal. But it was the only one that was considered possible.

And why did the FPF, even knowing the possibility that Palmeiras was in the decision of the Copa do Brasil, scored the derby on such a close date?

Internally, the organization argues that, due to the state of the fan, the Paulista calendar had to be published 60 days before the start of the championship. Thus, it was released on December 29.

Also according to the argument used by the FPF behind the scenes, on January 12 Palmeiras secured a place in the Libertadores final and two days later the CBF announced the programming of the Copa do Brasil finals for February 11 and 17 .

Following this reasoning, on January 30, CBF changed the Copa do Brasil decision dates to February 28 and March 7, days used by the State. Then, the situation of the derby began to be assessed.

In other words, the understanding in the federation is that when the São Paulo team needed to be released, it was difficult to make projections about the finalists of the Libertadores and the Copa do Brasil. And that it would also be complex to program the games taking into account hypotheses. There is also the argument that Paulista suffered with a change of dates made by CBF.

Also used in the FPF is the argument that postponement of the classic would require the consent of the Corinthians.
