A 1 year and 8 month old baby died after falling ill in the city of Araci (BA). The suspicion is that the city’s water is contaminated. Another 30 people were also ill and were hospitalized. Two of them were diagnosed with rotavirus, a disease caused by ingesting water or food contaminated by viruses. The information is from G1.
According to the city’s Health Secretariat, the case occurred in the village of Lagoa do Boi, which has around 700 inhabitants. Among the symptoms that patients present are: vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. A police investigation was opened to investigate the case.
According to the city, the water samples were collected and sent to be examined at the Central Public Health Laboratory (Lacen), in Salvador. There is still no forecast for the disclosure of the result.
According to the Bahia Water and Supply Company (Embasa), responsible for water supply in the region, the tests carried out by the company did not indicate contamination. Therefore, the water tank in the region will also be analyzed.
Also according to G1, Embasa, at the request of the city, suspended the water supply in the rural area of the municipality. Army tanker trucks were sent to the site to supply the population. Since the supply was interrupted, there was no registration of new patients with symptoms.
Note from Embasa
Through a note to G1, Embasa reported that “since the suspicion arose that the water distributed in the community of Lagoa do Boi, in the municipality of Araci, was lifted by the Sanitary Surveillance, due to episodes of discomfort in the local population hospitalization and death, Embasa initiated a series of measures destined to guarantee the health of the local population ”.
The note indicated that, on “11 (September), the company interrupted the supply in the rural towns of Lagoa do Boi, Lagoa dos Cavalos and Jurema and began an investigation by collecting samples in the reservoir and in the distribution network local and laboratory analysis to verify that the water is within the potability standards determined by the Ministry of Health and if there are indications of polluting substances in the water ”.
“The results obtained so far indicate that the water distributed in the town has residual chlorine within the standard recommended by the Ministry of Health and does not have microorganisms that are harmful to health or that endanger the health of the population.”
On Wednesday (16), “company technicians collected samples in the reservoir of the supply system to analyze more potability parameters and arrive at conclusive evidence on the quality of the water distributed in these places.”
“The supply will continue to be interrupted in the three localities until all the evidence on the quality of the water distributed in these localities is submitted to the Health Surveillance,” the note concludes.
