The updated data are from the Civil Defense of Belo Horizonte; There is the possibility of rain of 20 to 40mm, with gusts of lightning and wind around 50 km / h until Sunday

The Civil Defense alerts the population of Belo Horizonte to the possibility of rain of 20 to 40 millimeters, with lightning and gusts of wind around 50 kilometers per hour, until 8 am on Sunday (25). The meteorological phenomenon that causes these precipitations will last until Monday (26) and the population must remain alert. According to updated data from the Belo Horizonte Civil Defense, there are 75 critical places due to the risk of flooding, spread over the nine regions of the city (see map). The Companhia Urbanizadora de Belo Horizonte (Urbel), indicates 1,100 homes in geological risk areas, in the main localities and marginal neighborhoods of the capital of Minas Gerais, with emphasis on the Serra and Taquaril clusters, in the Central-South and East regions , respectively. However, the consolidated data for risk areas is from 2017.

Today, the data available from Urbel on the number of homes in risk areas in the capital of Minas Gerais – 1,100 homes – are part of the diagnosis of three years ago. According to the director of Risk Areas of the company, Isabel Volponi, the study underwent a very significant change as a consequence of the 2019/2020 rainy season, in which completely atypical rains occurred. “Very stable, occupied and unoccupied areas have been affected. We update the diagnosis from time to time and at each field visit, ”he explains. The expectation is that the final survey will be completed early next year.

Accident prevention

The director of Risk Areas at Urbel, Isabel Volponi, highlights the changes that the inhabitants of areas sensitive to geological accidents or floods must address in order to prevent accidents: “It is very important that people who live in hillside areas and also in low-lying areas , susceptible to flooding, observe if there is water undermining the slope, on a slope, in the ravine. If there is vegetation, clothesline, pole is slightly inclined. If you notice cracks in the ground or what we call ‘steps’, it looks like a natural ladder that appears on the ground ”.

Volponi also emphasizes what should not be done without guidance, such as cutting or removing vegetation, throwing garbage and debris, allowing the concentration of wastewater from the sink, bathroom or the gutter of the house “It is essential to have a gutter to remove the water that falls from the roof directly on the slope. Anyone who has a retaining wall at the back of the house, or in the front, should also observe if the structure does not have cracks, if it is not inlaid, if it is not undermining the water and if the drainage made in the wall is working ”, He adds.

If any of these problems are observed, the population should request an inspection at Urbel by calling 3277-6409, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. In case of emergency, they are carried out by the Civil Defense, which can be activated as of 199.

Villagers and residents of the favelas can also count on the immediate help of volunteers from the Civil Defense Centers. They are the bridge between these communities and the government and represent more than 400 inhabitants, divided into 49 nuclei of the towns and shacks of the capital.
These volunteers are trained by the city to provide immediate assistance to residents until the arrival of official agencies, transmit rain alerts and guide the population in case of floods and floods. The training of these teams takes place before the rainy season and includes identification of the geological risk, first aid workshops and rescue in flooded places.

Across the state, according to updated data from the Geological Survey of Brazil (SGB-CPRM), an estimated 620,000 people live in geological risk areas, in about 138,000 homes. In 2020, 5 more cities were added to the 189 already included in the study, totaling 194 municipalities in Minas Gerais covered.

The last five published mappings were made in Caeté, Cana Verde, Itutinga, Cambuquina, and Três Corações. Of these, only Itutinga does not have people living in high-risk areas or high-risk sectors. The other four municipalities add more than 4,200 people who live in approximately 1,000 homes, located in 58 risk sectors.

According to meteorologist Ruibran dos Reis, atmospheric pressure is falling sharply between the coast of Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo. With that, the formation began, in the ocean, on Saturday (24), of a subtropical cyclone. As much humidity converges to the continent and causes the formation of clouds, the system causes rain. The highest volume of rainfall in Minas is forecast for the Zona da Mata and the eastern region of the state. “The phenomenon works like a cold front and will return, on Monday, to the ocean, when it begins to dissipate,” explains the climatologist.
