Atlético-MG beat Vasco 4 to 1 tonight (4) and was isolated in the leadership of the Brazilian Championship. Cruzmaltino opened the scoring with a nice bike goal from Benítez, but conceded four goals even before the break. Jorge Sampaoli’s team turned the score around with Arana and Savarino and then increased the lead with penalty goals from Guga and Keno.
With the victory, El Gallo reaches 27 points and opens a five-point lead over Internacional and Palmeiras. Colorado has one more game than the two competitors.
Vasco missed a good opportunity to return to the G4. Ramón Menezes’ team continues with 18 points and is now in eighth position. In the next round, Vasco will go to Salvador to face Bahia, and Atlético-MG will face Fortaleza in Castelão.
Keno: well done
Named left winger, Keno again played a good game with Atlético-MG. The forward took responsibility for the play that culminated in Savarino’s goal in the first half and then brandished Fernando Miguel’s net on a penalty. The striker was instrumental in creating plays and moved a lot, playing on both sides.
Andrey: bad
The game was still 0-0 when Andrey got his first yellow card after a foul on Jair. Tense, just when the entire Vasco team was at the beginning of the second half, he again committed a foul and was sent off by Vuaden.
Atlético-MG play intense and press, even with an advantage
Atlético-MG had a very intense game against Vasco. With the relentless movement of the attacking trio of Keno, Eduardo Sasha and Savarino and the pressure on the opposing ball, Galo created good chances to balance Fernando Miguel’s net.
Guilherme Arana, selected as a left-back, became one more midfielder in the offensive transition and constantly played alongside Nathan and Alan Franco. In lateral play, the Minas Gerais team populated the rival area with up to seven athletes. Good football turned the game into an easy victory for the locals.
Basque lacked tranquility
Vasco suffered a lot to resist the intensity of Atlético-MG. He scored a beautiful goal early in the game, but the change in less than ten minutes shook the team. Proof of Vasco’s nervousness is that the other two Athletic goals came from penalties. The second penalty came shortly after Ramón made two changes to the team. Already at a great disadvantage, the team suffered one more blow in the second half, with the expulsion of Andrey.
Bike target
The most beautiful play of the game came out with just eight minutes of play. After taking a throw-in into the area, Réver shot back, but Benítez was not present. The 10 jersey killed the ball in the chest and sent a bicycle to the back of the goal.
No time brother!
Despite the goal at the start of the game, Vasco barely had time to take advantage of it. Five minutes later, at 13, Atlético-MG equalized thanks to the force of Guilherme Arana’s shot and turned the scoreboard with Savarino. The turn came at 17, less than ten minutes after Vasco opened the scoring.
Two penalties, sidewalk turned
Thanks to two vacillations from Vasco’s defense, Galo managed to transform the turn into an even more elastic result. In the first, Carlinhos knocked Nathan down. So, Castan misses Alan Franco. Penalty scored in both plays and goals from Atlético-MG, with Guga and Keno.
Inspired by English
Today’s round of the English Premier League featured two impressive goals. Aston Villa made 7 x 2 on Liverpool, and Tottenham applied 6 x 1 in Manchester United. The latter had a similar Mineirão script: United came forward as Vasco and also went into halftime losing 4 to 1. The coincidence did not go unnoticed by fans on social media.
“Premiere” in Mineirão
Today’s match was the first time that Atlético-MG and Vasco have met in Mineirão since the stadium reopened for the 2013 Confederations Cup. The last meeting between the two in Mineirão had been in 2010, with a 2-1 for Galo, on occasion with goals from Ricardinho and Muriqui.
Game timeline
Vasco opened the scoring with just eight minutes of play with Benítez scoring a bike. However, in less than ten minutes, El Gallo was already ahead of the scoreboard. Sampaoli’s team drew at 13 with Arana and turned the game around with Savarino at 17. At 26, Nathan pushed Carlinhos into the box and Guga extended the penalty from the penalty spot. Then, at 36, Keno scored his fourth athletic goal, also from a penalty.
