During the night, a group of artists painted the phrase ‘Vidas Pretas Importam’ in front of the Masp, on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo. The incident was motivated by the case of João Alberto Silveira Freitas, a 40-year-old black man who died the day before yesterday after being attacked by two security guards at the Carrefour supermarket in Porto Alegre.
According to one of the artists, identified as Pagu, the painting had the support of the Municipal Secretary of Culture, CET (Companhia de Engenharia de Trafico) and the police.
“We began this process yesterday afternoon, motivated by the death of João Alberto, but not only of him, but of all the blacks who die in Brazil,” he explained, in an interview with CNN.
This message, not only with the support of the Municipal Department of Culture, CET and the Police, which allowed us to do this work all night, helped us, circulating and closing all traffic, but it is an independent work, collaborated by several São Paulo artists, who believe that public space is a space for demonstration and it is important as a society to organize ourselves in actions like this, since society is the one that suffers the most with all the disparities that exist in Brazil, ”he added.
Protests across the country
the death of João Alberto caused the revolt among Brazilians and protests generated in some capitals of the country. Some 2,500,000 people gathered in a protest late yesterday afternoon in the north of Porto Alegre. The protesters gathered in front of the main entrance to Carrefour, on Avenida Plínio Brasil Milano.
In São Paulo, protesters stormed the Carrefour store, located inside a shopping center in the Paulista Avenue region. Under orders not to loot, the protesters broke through the iron fence and the glass facade of the supermarket, threw stones and looted.
In the capital of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, there were protests in two supermarket chains, one inside a shopping center and the other in a central unit. Among the protesters was singer Djonga, who posted stories of the event on his Instagram.
In Rio de Janeiro, the protest took place in a Barra da Tijuca unit, where protesters shouted “murderers” and “black lives matter.” Curitiba also registered acts late in the afternoon yesterday.
