The driver of a car captured by video surveillance cameras dragging a dog to its death, in Jaguaré, in the north of the state, gave testimony before the Civil Police, this Tuesday (13), and explained the reason that led him to commit such an act. According to the head of the 18th São Mateus Regional Police Station, delegate Leonardo Malacarne, the 32-year-old man claimed that his intention was to euthanize the animal, since, according to the suspect, it appeared to be sick and hungry.

Also, according to the delegate, the man, to whom the police did not reveal his identity, said that he found the dog on the street and decided to euthanize it, tying it up in his car. To do this, he used a clothesline rope that he kept in the vehicle.

The crime was recorded by security cameras in a condominium located in the center of Jaguaré. The images show the suspect’s vehicle driving down the street dragging the dog, tied to the back of the car. The animal tries, but can barely keep up with the vehicle.

About half an hour later, another video shows the dog already dead. The driver gets out, jumps on the animal and cuts the rope that was holding it. Then get in the vehicle and go. He still comes back to check if the animal is dead.

The case was denounced by Suely Izabel Dalvi, president of an NGO that rescues abandoned animals. He received video surveillance images on social media on Monday night (12), shortly after the crime.

Suely says that she was shocked and upset by the scene. “In the middle of Children’s Day and the feast of Our Lady of Aparecida, this barbarity was captured by the security cameras of a residence in the center of Jaguaré. It is human cruelty. Imagine what did not happen that dog, hung, dragged alive. To serve as an example for other people to be more careful and respect animals in the way they deserve to be respected, ”he lamented.

The president of the NGO says that the animal lived on the street and was known in the city. He also said that he received water and food from residents and merchants. “The animal is an innocent being, it has no malice. I don’t know why, what motivated it to commit this crime. So it has to answer yes,” he said.

This Tuesday morning, while Suely made the police report, the suspect, who was spending the holidays with friends in Jaguaré, appeared at the police station seeking help. He ended up in detention. “The population emptied the tires of his car so that he would not run away. For fear of being lynched or beaten, he sought help and ended up stopping at the police station,” said the president of the NGO.

The suspect was referred to the São Mateus Regional Police Station, where he was charged with the crime of animal abuse. As the penalty is 2 to 5 years in prison, there is no guarantee.

Until last month, the penalty for mistreating cats and dogs was lighter. The suspect signed a detailed statement and was released. However, on September 30, the law underwent a major change. “Now, since the penalty is 2 to 5 years in prison, the person can be imprisoned. Formerly the law was 1 to 3 years in prison,” explained criminal lawyer André Rocha.

According to the Civil Police, the man was arrested on the spot and will be subjected to a custody hearing at the Provisional Detention Center. The production of TV Vitória / Record TV tried, but could not contact the defense of the suspect.
