A couple was arrested last night on suspicion of demanding $ 1,000 to return a pug, which has been missing since Dec. 25. The dog escaped from a rural property in Araucária, in the metropolitan region of Curitiba, and was seen being carried by a man in a pickup truck. Since then, the family has been searching for Buba, as the pug is called.
On Monday (28), a 23-year-old man got in touch and started demanding the money. The police had access to the audios sent to the family. “If you are really interested in the dog, you are willing to pay for what I said, look what he does. Otherwise, Dad, sadly … the dog was found in the street, you know,” said the criminal.
That same day, the animal was sold for R $ 600 to a woman from Campo Largo, in the same region of Paraná. According to Police Chief Matheus Laiola, who is responsible for the investigation, the pug was advertised on the OLX website and a receipt was given to the buyer in the negotiation. “She didn’t know the animal was being searched. She was desperate and she returned it last night,” Laiola says.
A video released by the police shows the pug’s reunion with guardian Anderson Kooiti Hissada, 24. “See if you know that guy over there, Buba,” a police officer told the dog. The pug walks towards Hissada and, recognizing it, smells and licks the guardian’s face, wagging its tail. “Hold on to this beast,” warns the policeman.
Hissada explained in a recording, made by the police, that Buba managed to get through a fence around the farm where they were. “It was our oversight,” acknowledged the tutor. In addition, he detailed how the extortion occurred. “This couple began to act in bad faith with me, calling me, sending messages via WhatsApp, extorting me, wanting money, making them a deposit so they can pass on information about where my dog was.”
The couple was arrested in Curitiba on suspicion of extortion. According to the delegate, the man’s 28-year-old partner was also arrested because he was aware of the crime and would be collaborating with him. In addition, contacts were made through his cell phone with the pug’s family.
