Argentines say goodbye this Thursday (26) to the football legend Diego Maradona, at a wake in Pink House (seat of government) that should receive tens of thousands of people.

Since midnight, hundreds of people began to gather in the May Plaza, in front of the emblematic Casa Rosada, for the farewell to the world champion in Mexico-1986, the day after the idol’s death from cardiac arrest.

“The opening hours of the door for the general public will be from 6 am (same time as Brasilia) … until 4 pm,” said a presidential statement.

The wake was reduced from three days to just one, at the request of the family.

Hundreds of messages sent by athletes and political figures around the world reflected the international popularity of the Argentine star.

Lionel Messi and Pelé, other world soccer stars, led a long list of emotional farewells to Maradona.

– “He is a genius” –

According to the preliminary result of the necropsy, he suffered from “acute heart failure, in a patient with dilated cardiomyopathy, and chronic congestive heart failure that generated acute lung edema.”

Around midnight, Maradona’s body was transferred from the morgue to a funeral home, from where it was transferred to the Casa Rosada, surrounded by a strong security device.

Claudia Villafañe, Maradona’s ex-wife, and her two daughters, Dalma and Gianinna, arrived at the presidential headquarters before midnight.

Along the way, and in each section, the caravan of dozens of police vehicles and motorcycles received applause. By the time the vehicle arrived at the funeral home, almost a thousand fans were already at the scene.

“He is a genius, he is the people, he is like us, life, love,” said Andrés Quintero, 42, who traveled two hours from the city of Tigre to accompany the wake.

Argentine President Alberto Fernández decreed three days of national mourning.

Death caused a global commotion and tributes dominated Buenos Aires. Thousands of fans gathered this Wednesday in the Boca neighborhood, where the famous Bombonera is located, or in the central Obelisco.

At the Boca Juniors stadium, fans created a shrine with flowers and candles.

Fans also entered the Diego Armando Maradona stadium of Argentina Juniors, northwest of Buenos Aires, to pay tribute to the idol. ‘El Pelusa’ made his debut on this lawn in the First Division at the age of 15.

The stadium was illuminated at night.

“Diego is my life, you are the joy of my heart,” the crowd shouted.

– Delicate health –

Maradona had been recovering from an operation to remove a clot from his head since November 3. On the 11th he was discharged, but the idol’s health was delicate and he was facing a new withdrawal syndrome.

He was in poor health when he turned 60 on October 30, when he reappeared from his confinement due to the pandemic at the Gimnasia y Esgrima stadium, the team he directed.

His lawyer, Matías Morla, revealed that Diego was suffering from depression when the clot was detected.

“He had a different behavior, he was very depressed and he made comments about relatives who had died, that they missed them,” he said.

– Death from natural causes –

Prosecutor John Broyard said the soccer star’s death occurred at noon Wednesday from natural causes.

Maradona had five children, two of them, Dalma and Gianinna, with his ex-wife Claudia Villafañe. There was discomfort in the family with the environment in which they have lived in recent years.

His other children, whom he had with three women, are Jana, Diego Júnior and Diego Fernando.

Maradona underwent various surgeries, including dramatic situations in 2000 and 2004. He also had a knee operation and walked with extreme difficulty.

Excesses and addictions are at the root of your health problems.

The climax of his career occurred with the Argentine title at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. His most famous match took place in the quarterfinals of this World Cup, when Maradona scored a goal with his hand, the famous ‘brother of God’, and the second that is considered the most beautiful in the history of the Cups.

Maradona had overcome his addiction to hard drugs a few years ago. But he continued to drink alcohol and was medicated with tranquilizers and anxiolytics.

It was not the same for some time. When he arrived at the Gymnastics stadium, he did not walk or speak as everyone was used to.

Despite the pandemic, many hope that the wake will gather a crowd similar to the funerals of Evita in 1952 or Juan Perón in 1974.
