The Argentine government announced on Friday (28) the extension of containment measures until September 20, after the country registered 11,717 new cases of the coronavirus in 24 hours. With that, the Argentines will reach six months of quarantine, started on March 20.

“If we neglect ourselves, there is no health system that can handle it,” warned Argentine President Alberto Fernández, in a message posted on social networks.

Argentina, with 44 million inhabitants, this Friday exceeded 391,996 cases and 8,271 deaths, with 222 deaths in the last 24 hours.

The novelty, however, was the authorization throughout the territory of meetings of up to 10 people in the open air, with the mandatory use of masks and respecting the minimum distance of two meters between individuals. Crowds in closed spaces are prohibited.

“The cases, deaths and affected areas in America are increasing,” Fernández analyzed.

In the statement, the president mentioned the government’s concern about the rapid increase in cases in the interior of the country, mainly in the province of Jujuy (north), where “the health system is at the limit.”

“A month and a half ago, 93% of new cases were concentrated in the AMBA (metropolitan area of Buenos Aires). In the rest of the provinces it was only 7%. Now, in the provinces the percentage has multiplied by five, today it represents 37% of the total of cases ”, he explained.

“The problem is no longer just the region of Buenos Aires, the problem is throughout the country,” he continued.

In recent weeks, thousands of people, encouraged by the opposition, have taken to the streets of the country’s main cities to protest against the government and the quarantine, an action criticized by epidemiologists.
