The Argentine government reported on Monday (19) that the barrier of 1 million cases of the new coronavirus was exceeded. According to a count by Reuters, the country is the fifth in the world to exceed the mark.

1,002,662 people were infected, with 26,716 deaths. At the beginning of the pandemic, the country began an extensive national quarantine, but even so, these figures were reached.

In recent weeks there has been a sharp increase in the number of cases in large cities in the interior of the country, after Buenos Aires and neighboring municipalities – which managed to control the contagion – were the most affected places for months.

A few days after the confirmation of the first case of the new coronavirus in Argentina, President Alberto Fernández implemented, on March 20, a national and mandatory quarantine. However, the prolongation of the quarantine for months led the Argentines to exhaustion. In the most recent announcement, the twelfth quarantine extension was implemented until October 11.

At present, various social, administrative, gastronomic, commercial and industrial activities have been restored in the country, except for large public events and others that involve meetings of people in closed places.

There is no Argentine city that maintains quarantine or confinement equal to the first months of the pandemic, although it is forbidden to travel without a mask throughout the territory. Furthermore, public transportation is limited to essential workers.
