Araújo disagreed with the criticism of Pompeo’s visit. The US embassy in Brazil reported that the secretary’s visit was aimed at discussing Venezuelan immigration to the region with the Brazilian foreign minister.
The visit, which takes place in the middle of the presidential campaign in the United States, was the target of criticism from parliamentarians, including the mayor, Rodrigo Maia (DEM-RJ), who affirmed that the conduct of the Brazilian government in the episode does not “agree with good international diplomatic practice ”and offends Brazilian foreign and defense policy.
The Brazilian foreign minister did not agree with the comments on the electoral use of the visit to Brazil, in order to criticize the Venezuelan government during a presidential race.
Araújo argued that there is a “great convergence” between Republicans and Democrats in the United States on how to position themselves in relation to Venezuela, the country and Brazil are among the nations that do not recognize the Maduro government and consider the opposition Juan Guaidó as president.
“It has been said, and perhaps one of the main criticisms of Secretary Mike Pompeo’s visit, which was an electoral platform for the November elections in the United States. Well, it is not. One of the elements that shows that it is not so there is a great convergence in the United States between Republicans and Democrats on the situation in Venezuela, ”said Araújo.
For the Brazilian Foreign Minister, “everything indicates” that the position of the United States in relation to Venezuela and the Maduro government will not change with the eventual victory of the opposition, whose candidate is Democrat Joe Biden.
“It does not make much sense to think of it as an electoral platform, since there is no substantial difference between the position of Republicans and Democrats in relation to Venezuela. In other words, everything indicates that, if there is a Democratic victory in the November elections, the US attitude towards Venezuela will continue to be exactly the same, ”said Araújo.

Senator Mara Gabrilli (PSDB-SP) asked Araújo if Brazil is prepared for the risk of defeat by Trump: President Jair Bolsonaro is an admirer of Trump and does not hide from the crowd for his victory in the elections.
The chancellor said that an eventual victory for Biden will not bring changes in relations between the two countries.
“It is not a fact that Brazil’s proximity is with Trump, and not with the United States. This is an interpretation, a right of you, but it is the other way around. Everything we are doing with the United States, I am sure, is permanent. interest for both countries. A Democratic government would probably maintain that same approach, unless they want to work against their own interests, which I am sure would not be the case. ”
