The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) decided on Thursday (11) to tighten the rules for the use of personal protection masks at airports, in order to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

As of March 25, accessories such as bandanas, scarves and “face screen” protectors can no longer be used as face protection. Likewise, acrylic, transparent plastic masks and those with an expiration valve, even professional ones.

Very common in Brazil, cloth masks, in materials such as cotton and tricoline, can only be used if they have more than one layer of protection and have a proper fit to the face. Otherwise, they are also prohibited.

“To protect the health of the traveler, the mask must be well adjusted to the face, covering the nose and mouth, without openings that allow the entry or exit of air and respiratory droplets. With the changes approved on Thursday, the models that do it We do not guarantee that this protection will no longer be accepted in airports and aircraft, ”says Anvisa, in a note.

The agency says that the use of a mask will only be dispensed in food courts, during meals, for people with autism spectrum disorder or who have disabilities that prevent its use, or for children under the age of three.

Since March 1, Latam, one of the largest airlines in the country, has already prohibited passengers from wearing masks with valves or only using scarves, scarves or cloth handkerchiefs as facial protection.
