A more tense atmosphere took over part of one of the interviews carried out by Andrés Sánchez in recent days. The president repeated the pattern of talking about the club’s indebtedness. The accumulated deficit of the current administration could reach R $ 200 million, added to 2018 and 2019.
Andrés Sánchez was questioned by Mauro Cezar Pereira, during an interview with ESPN, about the hole in the alvinegro club accounts, which continues to grow in this new mandate from Andrés. The president then began a conversation with the commenter about a poll by the commenter, dated last month, on the payrolls of the 20 clubs in Serie A 2019.
The barbarian exchange lasted almost ten minutes and had information on the Corinthians quoted by Andrés. In general, the president channeled the discussion to Flamengo’s payroll and the fact that this is the team that supports the journalist, without answering him about the causes or consequences of the accumulated debt of R $ 113 million in the first half of his current period (2018 and first half of 2019).
Today, the club’s total debt is R $ 626 million. With the update of the numbers for the second half of 2019, which have not yet been published, the deficit is expected to increase by a few tens of thousands of reais. There are those who fear in the São Jorge Park that the total indebtedness will already reach around R $ 700 million after this next update.
In an attempt to justify, Andrés naturalized negative numbers by suggesting an annual and uninterrupted deficit since 2012 that is an almost mandatory standard in the São Jorge Park for the formation of champion teams. The argument is half true. In 2016, for example, there was a surplus due to post-title negotiations for the Brasileirão-15. But more than that:
It is true that Corinthians has accumulated titles in the three administrations implicitly mentioned above. It is not true that the club has recorded an uninterrupted deficit in all seasons. It is also worth mentioning that, despite São Paulo’s double champion with Andrés in recent years, the team’s loss of strength in all competitions played in the period is notorious.
The current Corinthians de Andrés was champion of 2018 and 19 state champions without the same flashy football of 17. He was also then Brazilian champion (Roberto de Andrade’s last title) for extras in national and international competitions. Post-heptachampionship Brazilian sales did not prevent the already recorded increase of more than R $ 100 million in the gap of the first three semesters of management.
In the aforementioned efforts, the club was twice champion of São Paulo, twice Brazilian champion, Libertadores champion, World Cup champion and champion of the Recopa Sul-Americana. All of this is also true, in parallel with recurring deficits. The exception dates from 2016: there was a surplus of R $ 31 million, driven by sales after the championship in Brazil.
In another attempt to justify spending from early 2018 to mid-2019, Andrés mentions:
- the lack of money at the box office, which is an old problem and originates from an agreement led by the current president himself since the days when he was conducting the Arena payment negotiations;
- The likely decline in broadcast and sponsorship revenue revenue caused by the 2020 new coronavirus crisis.
Corinthians x Flamengo
Regarding the central issue of the fight, Andrés affirms that Mauro Cezar was partial in his survey of the salaries of the Brazilian teams. In this, Corinthians appears linked with Flamengo as owners of the largest CLT leaves in the country.
The alvinegro president says the club in Rio pays players up to double the amount they record on CLT, suggesting there are fat gloves. The commenter responds that clubs can officially record at least 60% of athletes’ salaries on CLT, so there is room for up to 40% payment on image rights.
This was the first time that Andrés and Mauro had been face to face in an interview (by video calls) since the journalist’s survey was published.
In the off-field dispute between the Corinthians and Flamengo teams, Andrés was also questioned in the Bandeirantes TV why Corinthians is so different from Flamengo when it comes to brands with similar strengths, measured by the size of the fans.
The president disagreed, suggesting that what is happening today is a good approval phase in Gávea. He mentions that “we already had great teams, Flamengo already had great teams, we were strong, weak, this is not a matter of management.”
Specifically regarding the match of club brand strength by mass fans, Andres said: “We have 40 million fans, but not even 10% consume.”
