One training session was enough for the interim Alexandre Grasseli to change the tactical scheme and improve Vasco. By drawing an attacker and reinforcing the medium, the coach was right in marking and positioning the team, something that left something to be desired in the victories that cost Ramón Menezes his job.
However, the biggest problem has not been solved. With a bad education, that is to say, an offensive articulation highly dependent on individual moves, Vasco did not have the strength for “anything else”. If the confrontation with Flamengo was balanced for a good part of the game, it could not be superior in the decisive moments. Plus: He saw individual errors that led to a 2-1 loss, on Saturday, in São Januário.

Now there are seven games without winning, two in the elimination of the Copa do Brasil. With four defeats and one draw in the last five games at Brasileirão, the team parked at 18 points and fell to 10th. A worrying scenario, even for the next coach.

The pressure of the bad moment did not seem to affect the team on the field. Grasseli opted for the traditional 4-4-2, with two lines of four well compressed. He took out Pikachu and gave Cayo Tenório a shot on the right. In between, Carlinhos joined Fellipe Bastos. And without Vinícius at the helm, Marcos Junior remained as the starter, which put Talles ahead to act alongside Cano.
These actions drastically changed the team’s stance. Ramón, for example, was reluctant to change his way of acting. On Saturday the ball was abandoned with a line of three (two defenders and Henrique). Carlinhos, in the middle, qualified the pass and did it from the right, in combination with Tenório, which Pikachu was not receiving. The middleweight gained mobility without Wands, and being more advanced and without needing to rebuild, Talles had more offensive strength.
Thus the goal arrived. It is true that Bruno Henrique failed, but Cayo had the merit of believing, going out and crossing to Talles. Well placed, Vasco was little threatened in the first half. The opponent’s greater possession of the ball was not threatening except for two goals from Bruno Henrique in control of Miranda.
Right at the start of the second half, Léo Pereira stuck his head out from a set piece. Andrey and Castan jumped and couldn’t clear the ball. Flamengo grew and Vasco stayed out of the ball (possession had a total of 61% to 39% for the visiting team). Vasco defended and only threatened shots from outside the area. Proof that the changes to the intermediate were basic and that, to make a leap in quality, you need more time and better parts.
Until, one more line, he decided: Fernando Miguel did it wrong, and Bruno Henrique turned around. Vasco, without articulation, struggled. Guilherme Parede entered well, it could be an alternative in the future. The goal disallowed by Cano’s offside was the best play built offensively. Much more is needed.
– We had a very clear idea of bringing Talles, touching Cano a little more, I realized in the games that I saw that Cano was very isolated. It also gave Talles, who is extremely talented, the possibility of a more versatile and loose game. We won with Carlinhos on the right and Benítez on the left. That was the intention, of an offensive line of four, when Vasco had the ball. With freedom for Tenório and Henrique as well, to provide support, and security inside with Andrey and Marcos Junior. When we ran out of the ball, especially in the first half, I warned Cano and Talles that we needed more pressure when the ball left Flamengo. We had moments of instability. I agree that we had a little difficulty. Andrey was at one point overwhelmed with ball production. We could have a more controlled ball output, a compatible game – Grasseli commented.
Vasco now has a week to train. Play Internacional on Sunday in Porto Alegre. Maybe with a new coach …
