Atlético-MG’s first 15 minutes in Vila Belmiro, against Santos, may have represented the best start to the team’s game under Sampaoli (taking into account the quality of the rival). The Rooster was dominant, pressured and seemed to play in his domain. He created crystal clear chances, but again sinned in the conclusions and did not open the scoring. One play, just after the overwhelming athletic start, defined the game. The fish won 3-1 (see offers in the video above).
With 1/3 of the first half, Mariano tried to retreat to Atlético’s defense field, but failed badly and ended up throwing Marinho, who still had a long way to go and Allan’s brand, whole in the play. Here comes the second error, as serious as: Rafael, who came out to try a cut almost in midfield (unnecessarily), threw himself on the Santos striker and was sent off directly. The right-back and the goalkeeper made the worst decisions they could make. And they were very expensive.

To restore the athletic goal, Sampaoli drew Marrony (who had started a game with Sasha for the first time) and placed Victor. Without playing for more than six months, the goalkeeper started the game very badly and, five minutes later, he took out a “chicken” in a cross shot by Arthur Gomes, which went under the legs of the shirt 1. The successive failures Individuals (from the trio Mariano, Rafael and Víctor) were decisive, and the three are, of course, directly responsible for the three lost points.
Below the trio that went very wrong, the offensive system as a whole also deserves the “slap on the wrist” from Sampaoli for the lack of precision in the opening minutes of the game. Clear opportunities were created. There was no whim to throw the nets in front of the opponent, which, of course, would change the game.

Registered the failures, it is necessary to highlight the positive in Santos: courage. The athletic stance when the two teams were 11 is already worthy of applause, since few teams enter the field against Santos in Vila Belmiro with the idea of cornering the rival in the defense field and “command the game”. There may even be someone who has that intention, but it is rare to find someone who can put it into practice. Until the expulsion, the Rooster succeeded. More than that, it held its value even as the setting got even more complicated, with Rafael’s red.
Atlético balanced the game with one less and came looking for a draw, with Alan Franco (who is doing very well). More vulnerable – for obvious reasons – he gave way to the strong Santos and took the second goal, in addition to the third, in the final minutes. Anyway, wanted. He ran the game when he had numerical equality, he maintained his brave stance when he was one less. If Cuca made substitutions to protect his team, Sampaoli made exchanges looking for the goal. With a numerical advantage and at home, Santos played close, looking for counterattacks, in almost the entire second half.

The posture and the game model, without a ball in the box, don’t give anybody three points, it’s true. Without knowing what they want, however, neither team succeeds in a long championship. Defending in the field the model proposed by the coach in victories and goals is easy. Maintaining an aggressive posture behind the scoreboard, playing away from home and with one less is commendable. Attitude was not enough in Vila, but the long-term outlook remains positive for precisely this reason.
