When referee Flvio Rodrigues de Souza finished the match at Independência, the ball was still rolling at Arena Cond. Still on the field, the athletes of America began to see the last moments of the Chapecoense match on a television monitor. The tension gave way to frustration when Anselmo Ramón hit the maximum penalty and scored the title goal.
Despite the disappointment in the runner-up, Coelho has more to celebrate than regret, as he assured the Brazilian’s return to the first division quite properly and, by the way, made history by reaching the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil – eliminated by Palmeiras after a 1-1 draw in So Paulo and 2-0 revolutions in Belo Horizonte.
Now, the squad rests for a few days for the 2021 season, which will start on February 28 (Sunday), at 4:00 p.m., against Boa Esporte, in Independência, for the first day of the Mineiro Championship.
The game
America’s story was simple: it was enough to achieve a result identical to that of Chapecoense to win the trophy. Right at the start of the match against Ava, goalkeeper Matheus Cavichioli made a great intervention by catching a penalty from the German defense. SporTV footage showed there was no shortage of Anderson in Getlio.
Cavichioli’s defense was almost simultaneous to Chapecoense’s goal against Confiana, at 4min, with forward Anselmo Ramón. Santa Catarina’s team came to take the lead for a few minutes, but Coelho, motivated by the brilliance of his goalkeeper, soon recovered in the duel.
America wanted more. So, he put a lot of pressure on the ball to force Ava’s mistake. It worked. At 15min, Ademir intercepted a pass from Joo Lucas and put Juninho in the face of the goal. Shirt 8 could have been unrolled for Felipe Azevedo, who appeared only in the large area. However, he preferred to finish off and stopped in a daring exit from goalkeeper Gledson.
If Juninho failed to finish close to the goal, Ademir hit the goal from long distance in the 22nd minute. Gledson even touched the ball, but didn’t hit it: 2 to 0. Merit for shirt 10, chosen as Srie B’s midfielder by SporTV thanks to the style of play of dribbling, sprinting, speed and movement. It was his eighth goal in 28 league games.
After handling the result for the remainder of the first half, Amrica almost made the third at 6 minutes into the final stage, when Rodolfo received a cross from Ademir and headed for Gledson’s good save. Independência’s goal did not come at that time, but it did at Arena Cond. It was from Reis, from Confiana, who left everything the same against Chapecoense.
The stage seemed perfect for America, but Ava stopped at 16min, with a header from Getlio, which was prevented the moment she received the launch from right-back Iury. It should be mentioned that the offer could only be awarded with the help of the VAR, which is not used in Series B.
While trying to hold on to Ava’s goal of going after the third goal, Amrica heard information about Chapecoense’s departure. Desperation came after 34 minutes, when in Santa Catarina forward Perotti put the local team ahead 2: 1.
The excitement continued to the end. In Chapec, Perotti scored one more, only that the referee pointed out an impediment. In Belo Horizonte, Ademir had a great opportunity to make the third for Coelho, but he overturned, after the great assistance of Neto Berola.
The ball stopped rolling at Independncia and continued at Arena Cond. Until the incredible happened: Chapecoense had a penalty in his favor, converted with the ex-Cruzeiro forward Anselmo Ramon and climbed to Srie A as champion.
