Little Alice Pamplona da Silva de Souza, 5, was on her mother’s lap, Franciely Silva, when she was shot in the neck. It was punctually midnight on January 1. The tragedy occurred during a fireworks show in Morro do Turano, in the Rio Comprido region, in the North Zone of Rio, where the family lives. The girl was taken to the hospital, but she did not resist. His death was confirmed at 1:10 am on the first day of the year.

– We were watching fireworks. She liked to watch. It was the most beautiful thing. He was on his mother’s lap, where you hope to have all the protection in the world. It was midnight sharp. It was then that she said, “Ow!” – recalls Mayara Aparecida de Souza, 22, cousin and godmother of Alicia, who helped the girl.

Alice’s body was buried this Saturday, January 2, at the Cemitério do Caju, in the Port Region of Rio. About a hundred people attended the ceremony. On New Year’s Eve, the family gathered at the home of Mayara, Franciely’s neighbor. They both live in the town known as Raia. The godmother was filming the fires when Alice was shot. In the video, you can hear the girl yelling “Ow!” and see the desperate family, running, when the shooting is interrupted.

– I didn’t hear gunshots at this time. Just fires. I don’t know how my aunt is going to live. Alice was an only child and the youngest granddaughter. The family was sad because we lost our grandfather in September, but at the same time, we were happy to be all together. But God took my little boy. She was a happy girl – said Mayara, who is Franciely’s niece.

The Military Police said that at the time Alice was shot, there was no operation in the region and there was no record of a confrontation. According to residents, a funk dance was taking place in Morro do Turano to celebrate the change of the year. The community has a Pacifying Police Unit (UPP) since 2010.

During the ceremony, this Saturday 2, in Caju, family and friends sang religious songs at the farewell. At the burial site, the coffin in which Alice’s body was opened, and Mayara recalled the girl’s joy:

– It wasn’t an oversight, sir. He died in his mother’s arms. He was a boy who loved to dance.

Through a note, the NGO Rio de Paz, which monitors the cases of children killed by firearms in the State of Rio, regretted that Alice joined in this sad story: poor child that Rio de Janeiro prevented from growing up. The girl Alice, only 5 years old, a resident of Morro do Turano, is included in the statistics of boys and girls killed by stray bullets, the most horrible side of crime ”. Last year, according to the organization, at least 12 children and adolescents died in these circumstances, an average of one per month.

The president of Río de Paz, Antonio Carlos da Costa, said that an effective public security policy is needed and recalled the deaths of cousins Rebecca, 7, and Emilly, 4, also shot last month in Baixada Fluminense :

– Alice had her life interrupted by a stray bullet not due to the action of the Military Police, but due to the absolutely irresponsible use of firearms. What has to be done is that the State and the Union have a public security policy. Less than 30 days ago, a stray bullet interrupted the lives of two poor girls from Baixada Fluminense. Today she is a girl who lives in Turano. If these deaths had taken place in Praça General Osório or in a condominium in Barra da Tijuca, would society and public authorities continue to deal with the indifference with which they face these deaths? We need to implement public policies in the favelas.

By note, the Secretary of State for Victims reported that it offered psychological and social assistance to Alice’s family. The Capital Homicide Police are investigating the case. By note, the Civil Police reported that “the parents of the 5-year-old girl Alice Pamplona da Silva gave testimony” and that “other witnesses will be called to clarify”: “The investigations continue to identify where the shot occurred. in the child and clarify the facts ”.
