Vasco will have a new president in the next three years. Until then a candidate for reelection, current president Alexandre Campello withdrew his candidacy this Tuesday morning. At a press conference in the Beneméritos Hall, in São Januário, in the presence of his supporters, he said that he was leaving the place to exempt the hectic electoral process. The club’s General Assembly called online elections for next Saturday the 14th.
– I want to make it clear that I will no longer participate in any election in this electoral process, not even to exempt the process. I even withdrew the candidacy. If there is a new election, I will work to make it happen in the best possible way – said Campello, who said that he will not support any candidate if a new vote is confirmed.

During more than an hour of interview, Campello criticized the events of the last few days, attacked the president of the General Assembly, Mussa, and the group of candidate Leven Siano (Somamos) for their actions in court. The official explained that the choice of the company “Eleja Online” to organize the elections was the main reason for withdrawing his candidacy.
– The club will continue to comply with court decisions. Today there was a call for Mussa for an exclusively online election, on Saturday. We will comply, as long as you comply with the statute rules. The club does not accept Elect Online. We understand that there is a conflict of interest, it was not the club that paid. This only removes the exemption. It is not possible to carry out an electoral process in which one of the boards pays the company that organizes the election. The club is ready to comply with the law, as long as it is legal – he said.
“What is happening is the decision that it will be online on the 14th. But what will happen, we don’t know. The fact of withdrawing the application gives us a lot of peace of mind. Now we no longer scare anyone, we have no preference, and we will defend the institution “he added.
Asked about the possibility of recognizing the victory of Leven Siano, who was the most voted candidate in Saturday’s elections, Campello replied:
– I will consider what Justice considers. It is not for me to judge. This is an issue that has been in court for some time. We would not have liked to get to that point.
Finally, Campello says that he wishes Vasco the best “regardless of the president-elect.”
“I will always be a fan, my life has always been closely linked to Vasco. I will always be willing to help, it is my nature. I will always be available for the club, of course, if they ask me. Regardless of the president-elect -” Campello stressed, applauded by his colleagues at the end of the interview ”.
On Friday night (6/11), the Justice determined that Vasco’s election had to be held in the morning of the following day, Saturday (7/11). The election began at 9:55 am and was scheduled to end at 10:00 pm. However, at 8:25 p.m., a decision by the president of the STJ, Humberto Martins, ordered the voting to be suspended.
Even with the STJ’s decision, Vasco’s board of directors decided to continue the election. Shortly after 10 p.m., when there were still members in line to vote, the lights in São Januário went out and voting was closed. Initially, the ballot boxes were sealed. However, the club couldn’t find a place to drop them off and decided to count at 2 in the morning.
At that time, only supporters of the candidates Leven Siano and Sérgio Frias remained at the headquarters. Supporters of Alexandre Campello, Jorge Salgado and Julio Brant had already left, as were all three candidates. Leven Siano was the most voted.
The decision of the STJ that suspended the voting also left online the action that marked the vote for the 14th, next Saturday.
