The Minister of Health, Eduardo Pazuello, said today during the arrival of two million doses of the Oxford / AstraZeneca vaccine at the Galeão airport in Rio, that Brazil needs internal production to satisfy internal demand.

“These imported doses are to start the process, but our country needs national production. It is national production in Fiocruz, Butantan and probably in a private company. for Sputnik vaccine production [V]That is being negotiated for this, that we are going to have mass production, mass production for mass vaccination. That is the goal of the Ministry of Health, ”Pazuello said in a quick statement.

Although the minister did not mention it, Brazil has already started with the production of Coronavac, an immunizer developed by the Chinese laboratory Sinovac in alliance with the Butantan Institute, but which faces difficulties with the import of supplies.

Butantan said this week that the supplies to manufacture Coronavac in the country were practically exhausted, the body linked to the São Paulo government has already distributed the first batch, with six million doses. In addition, it is capable of delivering just over 4.1 million units. So it depends on the Chinese raw material to guarantee new shipments.

During the event, Eduardo Pazuello also said that the arrival of the new batch is “the beginning of the process” and mentioned the expectation about the release of IFA – active pharmaceutical ingredient

“We are negotiating to receive more doses now in early February and the IFA is necessary for Fiocruz to start producing up to 15 million doses per month,” he said.

In his speech at the airport, Pazuello also praised the SUS (Unified Health System) in Brazil and described it as “the great tool we have for public health in our country.”

“It is the largest public health system in the world and without this system we would not have been able to do what we are doing to combat the coronavirus,” he said.
