The 2019/2020 season of the NBB has officially ended. The decision was published by the National Basketball League (LNB) on Monday night and was based on the country’s current situation in the fight against the new coronavirus.
Through a videoconference, the entity’s representatives and the 16 participating clubs agreed at the meeting that there is no longer any possibility of resuming competition on time and with all the necessary security measures. In the vote, the teams were unanimous in choosing the closure. The parties had been suspended since March 15.

In order to arrive at the definitive cancellation, a work team made up of LNB presented in the last two weeks detailed reports for a possible restart of the NBB. In addition to economic, logistical and strategic issues, the health measures and the preservation of the physical integrity of the athletes were also scored. Among them, a period of at least 40 days of preparation before the games, and the possibility of massive testing and isolation of all those involved in the organization.
Despite the possibilities presented, most of the clubs considered that the conditions are not yet favorable, especially since each state is at a different time to combat the pandemic, which would make training unfeasible and would put the health of those involved at risk. .
– We went to the timer. We listen to all the characters that make NBB one of the most admired competitions in Brazil. We sit down weekly with all the clubs, athletes, coaches, referees, sponsors, media partners and create a project to resume the competition. It is sad to have to end the season and we did not want that, but we left that experience convinced that we did everything possible – the interim LNB president, Nilo Guimarães lamented.
It was also decided in the assembly that the final classification of the regular phase of the season will be maintained to define, only, which teams will represent Brazil in international competitions next season. Flamengo, Franca, São Paulo and Minas were the leaders before the closing. Both the Baskteball Champions League and the South American League have not yet defined their regulations for the official definition of how many Brazilian teams will be invited to each dispute.

It is worth remembering that the efforts of LNB and the clubs were for the championship to end on the court. Even before the arrest, rounds were held with the doors closed. In the more than 50 days since the calendar freeze, the entity held weekly videoconferences with the leaders of the clubs to reevaluate the possibilities and adopt the appropriate measures at all times.
The first step was taken on March 26, with the end of the regular phase. There were still open rounds, but everyone agreed to the closure, holding positions before the strike. The NBB, then, would resume from the eighth playoffs of the final, even in the format to be defined. During the period, aid was also approved for teams, arbitration service providers and a 20% reduction in LNB executive salaries in the coming months to cut expenses.
