The government and congressional committee, created last week to discuss actions against the Covid-19 pandemic, had its first meeting on Wednesday (31). After the meeting, President Jair Bolsonaro made a statement in which he again criticized the social distance measures. At this point, Bolsonaro’s speech diverged from other participants in the meeting who also made a statement: the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga, and the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (DEM-MG).
Pacheco and Queiroga spoke to the press first. In the speech of the two, at some point, the defense of social distancing measures to contain the pandemic emerged. The Speaker of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), also attended the meeting.
Pacheco: ‘Union and pacification will be the way for us to triumph in this confrontation’
Pacheco cited the Easter holidays this weekend and said that people should not get involved in crowds. He also requested a uniform communication from the Presidency of the Republic to alert the population about the use of masks and distance.
“Communication is very important, that there is an alignment of the social communication of the government, of the press office of the Presidency of the Republic, in the sense that there is a uniform discourse, that you have to be vaccinated, put on a mask, hygiene hands, social distance is necessary to prevent the increase of the disease in our country “, affirmed the president of the Senate.
According to the president of the Senate, it was Queiroga who suggested that prevention warnings be reinforced during the Easter holiday.
“A very rich suggestion from the Minister of Health, to take advantage of the occasion of Holy Week, which is a public holiday that tends to stimulate overcrowding, so that the Brazilian people are aware that they need to do social distance even on public holidays. “, completed Pacheco
Queiroga spoke next:
“Thank Pacheco for the appointment regarding the holiday. During the holiday there can be no unnecessary crowds. It is important to wear a mask, maintain isolation. It is important to do this. Extreme measures are not desired. So let’s do this, ”said the Minister of Health.
President’s statement
Bolsonaro: ‘The Brazilian has to go back to work’
“It is not by staying at home that we are going to solve this problem. This policy [distanciamento social] it is still being adopted, but its spirit was to prepare with ICU beds, respirators, so that people would not lose their lives due to lack of care, ”said Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro made the statement alone, after the three previous officials. As he has been doing since the beginning of the pandemic, he said that social isolation hurts the economy. Again he criticized the measures of the governors who adopted restrictions on the movement of people.
“No nation can sustain itself for long with these types of policies. And what we really want is to return to normality as soon as possible. Looking for measures to combat the pandemic, as we have done with the issue of vaccines,” he added. President.
Brazil is currently experiencing the most critical phase of the pandemic, since the first cases of Coovid-19 began to register in the country, just over a year ago. The number of deaths and new infected people has registered successive records. The overload in the hospital system has generated queues in ICUs and threatens the lack of medicines and supplies.
In the uncontrolled pandemic stage, as is the case in Brazil, scientists and health authorities recommend the adoption of measures to restrict circulation, to contain the acceleration of contagion.
