SOROCABA – The figures of the new coronavirus interrupted the downward trend and began to rise again last week, in Baixada Santista, on the coast of the State of São Paulo. Considering the incubation period of the virus, the increase may be related to the high capacity of the region’s beaches between the last weekend of August and the weekend of September 7. The specialist says that the trend of reduction that the State is already experiencing is unstable, subject to possible increases in transmission, so attention must be maintained. The state government reported that the figures in the region indicate stability in the pandemic.
The bulletins of the municipalities show that the daily average of covid-19 cases, which was 476 in the week of August 5 to 11, decreased week by week, reaching the daily average of 149 in the week of August 2 to September 8. In the week of September 9-15, the daily average rose to 196.
The daily average of deaths had a similar behavior. There were 13 daily deaths in the week of August 5 to 11 and they decreased gradually, until closing the week of September 2 to 8 with an average of 5 daily deaths. The following week, however, the number increased to a daily average of 8 deaths. The latest figures indicate that the uptrend may continue. Only on Thursday 17, in only three cities that updated the bulletins – Santos, Guarujá and Cubatão – were five deaths from Covid-19 registered.
In total, Baixada Santista reached 52,300 confirmed cases and 1,892 deaths from the new coronavirus. Only Santos has 19,089 cases and 597 deaths, followed by Guarujá (7,910 cases and 372 deaths), Praia Grande (7,869 cases and 225 deaths) and São Vicente (6,158 cases and 387 deaths). This Thursday, the State of São Paulo registered 916,821 positive cases and 33,472 deaths from the virus.
More cars
The increase in the flow of tourists to Baixada Santista and other cities on the São Paulo coast has occurred since the end of August, when the commercial reopening was expanded and it became more difficult to control access to the beaches. During the weekend of August 29 and 30, the first of the resumption, the images showed crowded strips of sand. On the Independence holiday, even with the pandemic, the flow of tourists was greater than in 2019.
Last weekend, 2.5 million vehicles used state highways bound for the interior and coast of São Paulo, according to data from the Secretary of State for Logistics and Transportation. The number of cars was 1.63% higher than that of the last weekend in August, the busiest so far since the start of the pandemic. In the access roads to the beaches of the north coast, the movement increased between 6.9% and 7.8%. In the Anchieta-Imigrantes System, for access to Baixada Santista, the increase was 1.94%.
For the infectious disease doctor Carlos Magno Fortaleza, it is still not possible to say with certainty if the upward oscillation of covid-19 cases in the Baixada has to do with the overcrowding of the beaches. “It is important to say that the plateau with a tendency to reduce cases and deaths that we see in the State as a whole is a general trend that results from small trends. In the long term there will be a visible reduction.”
According to him, the trend to reduce the pandemic has an unstable balance, subject to large variations with possible increases in transmission. These increases may be associated with more people on the beaches, but also with the opening of bars and restaurants and with a little less attention. These rising ebbs were seen in Europe and the United States. In Europe it became almost like a second. Therefore, it is not possible to lower your guard. The possibility of increasing the number of cases in case of greater exposure is real ”, he said.
‘It’s early,’ says the secretary
The Secretary of State for Regional Development, Marco Vinholi, said that, taking into account the average incubation period and the appearance of the first symptoms, it is too early to see any change in the pandemic related to the movement of the beaches during the holiday of the independence. “Even if we compare the number of cases and hospitalizations in the days before with the days after the holiday, we will have absolutely stable figures in the region,” he said. According to him, the State continues to guide respect for the rules of social isolation, the use of masks and the policy of non-crowding, as well as the inspection and orientation of local councils.
