Whoever passes this Monday morning (14) in front of Atacadão on Avenida Duque de Caxias, in Bairro Santo Antônio, in Campo Grande, finds a scene of destruction. After almost 12 hours of intense work, the fire that hit the supermarket was controlled by the Fire Department, but there are still small outbreaks in isolated places.
Throughout the night, the military continued to work on the aftermath of the building. This morning, from afar you could still see the smoke coming out of what was left of Atacadão.
On the firefighters’ faces, expressions of weariness were clear. Some of them lounged on the grass in the wholesalers’ parking lot. This was the fourth major fire in 8 years in the city.
The fire that hit the supermarket started yesterday shortly before 5 pm (13). The building, which was currently full, was evacuated. Officials still tried unsuccessfully to control the flames with a small hose.
Quickly, the flames that, according to customers, started on the shelves of the cleaning sector, spread throughout the supermarket. A cloud of black smoke swept over the region.
The fire also affected the supermarket stock and the product loading and unloading area. Part of the metal roof gave way.
The “work group” to extinguish the flames had 14 vehicles and 23 soldiers from the Fire Department, Infraero and the Army.
