After 23 days in the neonatal ICU, the baby born in an emergency birth was discharged after his mother had complications from Covid-19. He spent days in the hospital, but could not resist. The information was released on Wednesday (22), by the Gaspar Vianna Clinic Hospital (FHCGV), in Belém, where the baby was treated.

Pietro was born on March 30, weighing 2,750 g, after his mother underwent an emergency caesarean section. She was part of the risk group for mitral stenosis, which is a malformation of a heart valve that makes it difficult for blood to circulate in the organ. The baby’s mother was already a FHCGV patient and, nine years ago, she underwent biological valve replacement surgery also in hospital.

At 34 weeks pregnant, she was admitted to the hospital with fever and dyspnea. After the emergency delivery, the baby was taken to the neonatal ICU.

“He needed resuscitation maneuvers at birth and was referred to the neonatal ICU. He was intubated for nine days, he received oxygen, he was medicated with antibiotics and vasoactive drugs in the critical period, he also had seizures,” reports the head of the neonatal ICU, Andrea Towers.

In view of the symptoms presented by Pietro’s mother, her case was notified as a suspect on Covid-19 and confirmation came on April 2. After the result, the patient was transferred to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia Foundation. There, the mother’s condition progresses to dyspnea and acute respiratory failure. The patient died on April 11.

After 23 days of hospitalization, the baby is already at home with the father and the 5-year-old sister. The family lives in São Miguel do Guamá.

“Pietro bravely resisted and went home sucking well and without clinical signs and without the onset of sequelae,” celebrates Dr. Andrea Torres.

Through social networks, the state governor, Helder Barbalho, thanked the health professionals who cared for the mother and the baby. “Thanks and pride of the neonatal ICU team at the Gaspar Vianna Clinic Hospital. Much emotion and deep happiness when seeing the image of this baby. May God protect his ways. My feelings for this mother’s family,” he wrote.
