The president of the National Academy of Medicine, Rubens Belfort Jr, released a note today repudiating what he called “carelessness, carelessness and negligence” of Brazilian government officials in relation to the health crisis that brought the pandemic to the country. The text calls for faster decisions on vaccination in Brazil and criticizes the “omission” of politicians.
“A large part of the 200 thousand deaths that we will soon count could have been avoided. The time lost with falsehood has killed tens of thousands and will continue to kill,” the president said in an extract from the letter. “How much lack of sanitary decorum and incredible frivolity. Shameful ignorance,” he adds.
According to the president, the National Academy of Medicine is concerned about the growth of the coronavirus in the country and calls on government officials to stop what he calls “irresponsible denial.”
The Academy also calls for an organized vaccination schedule to be made as quickly as possible, avoiding further delays. The text also establishes that it is “impossible” for the federal and state parallel plans to be effective.
Belfort Jr warns that, although essential, the vaccine cannot be the only measure to contain the covid-19 to spread throughout the country and asks that Massive population testing is performed, helping to contain the spread of the virus in a messy manner.
“In addition to the vaccine, it is necessary to educate and stimulate examples and adequate information programs for the mandatory use of masks, the distance between people, to stop crowds at all costs,” he concludes.
