Following the announcement that today the Presidente Prudente region, in the interior of São Paulo, has been downgraded to the red phase of the São Paulo Plan, three other regions have been targeted by the state government due to the increase in the occupancy rate of beds in the ICU (Intensive Care Units) for the treatment of patients with covid-19: Greater São Paulo, mainly ABC region, Sorocaba and Registry.

The information was provided by the secretary of State for Economic Development, Patrícia Ellen, at a press conference on the progress of the pandemic this end of the year. Governor João Doria (PSDB) did not show up because he set aside ten days to “stay with the family.”

Today, Presidente Prudente fell back to the red phase after the UCI bed occupancy rate reached 83.1%, three percentage points above the limit established by the government. Starting today, only essential stores (such as pharmacies, bakeries, and markets) will be allowed to operate and restaurants, bars, and gyms will be restricted.

“I would like to take the opportunity to highlight some regions that have bed occupancies that deserve additional attention,” Ellen said after mentioning “the dramatic increase” in bed occupancies at Presidente Prudente.

The work is being done by the [Secretaria de] The health of relocating beds and prioritizing these regions, with the opening of new beds, which is the Registry Region, had a significant increase in the Sorocaba Region and the Metropolitan Region, especially in the ABC Region

“These are regions that are occupying more beds. None have passed the risk barrier, which is the red barrier, but we always have some specific municipalities that have more difficulties,” he said. “President Prudente entered the red phase, we act immediately and it will be done with all regions.”

See how is the occupation of UCI in these cities:

  • Greater São Paulo: 67%
  • São Bernardo do Campo: 71% (as of December 18, latest data available)
  • Santo André: 58%
  • São Caetano do Sul: 38%
  • Sorocaba: 71.1%
  • Registration: 69.5%

End of year restrictions

Today, the government also announced that the entire state will have “specific restrictive measures” against the coronavirus between December 25 and 27 and between January 1 and 3, when all municipalities will be in the red phase.

“We are not in the time of the parties or the crowds. It is in these moments that this risk of an uncontrolled pandemic occurs and the whole world is applying specific measures at this time,” Ellen said.

João Gabbardo, executive coordinator of the Covid-19 Contingency Center in São Paulo, said that the measure serves as a “signal to the population” given the severity of the increase in the outbreak.

“It is a signal for the population that we are in a very worrying phase in relation to the number of cases and we have to show the population that the recommendation is to stay at home. If you travel as little as possible to essential activities,” he began.

Yesterday, the Secretary of State Health, Jean Gorinchteyn, affirmed that in the last four epidemiological weeks, São Paulo had a 54% increase in confirmed cases. The number of deaths, on the other hand, increased 34% in the period.
