Fourth Brazilian state with the highest number of deaths confirmed by new coronavirus, State has a death profile that resembles other countries where the epidemic first came, if we consider a cut of pre-existing diseases (comorbidities) that increase the risk of complications from infection. About 33% of fatalities in Pernambuco had hypertension, 25% live with diabetes, 12% with other cardiovascular problems, 5% were obese, and 4.6% smoked or were former smokers. In most cases, the patient lived with more than one health condition.

These data are preliminary and are compiled according to the information in the epidemiological bulletins of the State Department of Health (SES). The information was compiled between the period of March 25 of this year (date of the first death of covid-19 in Pernambuco) until May 8, the day the State confirmed 82 fatalities in 24 hours, a daily record from the first death. . Daily, with the acceleration of the epidemic curveHowever, the prevalence of hypertension, as a pre-existing disease, becomes more expressive among patients who did not resist the complications of the new coronavirus and died. Patients with chronic diseases, such as hypertension, are not specifically a group at increased risk for infection. But when they get sick with the virus, they are predisposed to develop the severe form of the disease. For this reason, they are people who must strictly respect social isolation and not neglect other preventive measures, such as hygiene habits.

What is the coronavirus?

Coronavirus is a family of viruses that cause respiratory infections. The new coronavirus agent was discovered on 12/31/19 after reported cases in China. The first human coronaviruses were first isolated in 1937. However, it was in 1965 that the virus was described as coronaviruses, due to the profile in microscopy, which looks like a corona.

Most people are infected with common coronaviruses throughout their lives, and young children are more likely to become infected with the most common type of virus. The most common coronaviruses that infect humans are the coronavirus alfa 229E and NL63 and the coronavirus beta OC43, HKU1.

How to prevent coronavirus?

The Ministry of Health provides basic care to reduce the overall risk of contracting or transmitting acute respiratory infections, including the coronavirus. Among the measures are:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, respecting the 5 hygiene moments. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze with a disposable tissue and throw it away.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
  • Health professionals should use standard precautions, contact measures and drops (surgical mask, gloves, non-sterile apron and glasses).

To perform procedures that cause aerosolization of respiratory secretions such as intubation, aspiration of the airways or induction of sputum, precautions with aerosols must be taken, with the use of an N95 mask.
