In recent days, there have been several reports in Brazil of people receiving packets of seeds as “gifts” of products purchased over the Internet, or even without placing an order. According to the Paraná Agricultural Defense Agency (Adapar), cases have already been registered in Paraná, including one in the Paranavaí region.
The coordinator of the Adapar Plant Certification, Traceability and Epidemiology Program, Juliano Farinacio Galhardo, alerts the population of Paraná so that, if they receive such an order, they should not open it or plant it, since these seeds can bring pests, diseases and weeds that they do not exist in the country, capable of causing serious damage to agriculture and the environment.
“Many of the pests and diseases they can contain are invisible to the naked eye and can only be detected by laboratory tests. Hence the importance of being handed over to Adapar or MAPA, to provide analysis and adequate disposal, in order to avoid the introduction of new pests in the State, ”he explains. Laboratory tests to identify the species and possible pathogens present in the material will be carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture.
Until last Friday (18), the Adapar inspectors collected three packages of seeds, which will be sent to the Ministry. Two came from the Curitiba region and one from the Paranavaí region. In all three cases, people reported that the origin of the package is Chinese and the reason for the shipment is unknown. One of them, according to Adapar, had made an online purchase last year, and now he has only received the seeds, from the same origin.
Adapar Orientation:
The agrarian defense institution also warns that the material should not be opened, thrown away, and much less used. Whoever receives the packages should look for the nearest Adapar unit, or the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply.
In Paranavaí, the Agency’s office is located at Rua Manoel Ribas, 331 – Centro, Paranavaí. Phone: (44) 3423-2362. The addresses and phone numbers of the units can be found on the Adapar website – Click here.
