In the fight against the fire, which burns the Atacadão structure on Avenida Duque de Caxias, inaugurated in 2012 at a cost of R $ 34 million, the Fire Department stands guard to protect neighboring properties.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Fernando Carminatti, public relations of the Mato Grosso do Sul Fire Department, in addition to the equipment at the entrance of the wholesaler, a strategy was established with firefighters also distributed to the sides and backs to protect the houses.
“The team at the back of the incident protects the houses, does a cooling and fire control service,” says Carminatti.
At the start of the fire, around 5 in the afternoon, residents of the Santo Antônio neighborhood, in Campo Grande, were concerned about the proportion of the flames and rushed out of their houses. The fire was sighted from various parts of the city.
The Atacadão management informed the firefighters that they will provide assistance to residents who need support, simply by contacting the staff at the front door.
At the site there are 11 vehicles, more than 40 military personnel and the 60-meter Magirus ladder, used to fight the fire and also to assess, from above, the risk of the wholesaler’s structure falling.
The fire was controlled, but the total extinction work had to happen at night. When the flames are extinguished, the sequels will be carried out, setting fire to all the material to verify that there is no risk of new outbreaks.
The fire started in the department with flammable liquids and soon grew to great proportions. The supermarket was open, with customers and employees, but there were no injuries.
