Nurse Cícero Romão de Souza, 51, already met the requirements to request her retirement, but preferred to postpone and help the team fight the coronavirus. Part of the group of professionals of the Mobile Emergency Attention Service, SAMU, was infected with Covid-19, had complications and died on Wednesday (22).

Cicero is the first death of a health professional in the city of Mogi das Cruzes. In the city, he also worked at Santa Casa for more than 20 years.

“I was recently talking to people who had already taken the time to retire. We even said: “put in this coronavirus business, take advantage and withdraw.” He said no, that he was not leaving the staff now, at that time, ”recalls his friend and Lieutenant Everton Oliveira Pinheiro de Godói, of the Fire Brigade..

Farewell

Playful, Cicero is fondly remembered by his friends.

Colleague Lt. Godói came to speak to the nurse on the phone two days after her admission, on April 14. Despite a brief dyspnea in his speech, he looked good.

“It really took you by surprise. The weekend we were having breakfast, the week I heard he was sick, but we talked and he said he was fine, recovering, “he says. “Then came the surprise that his condition worsened.”

Rodrigo Romão, director of the São Paulo State Nurses Union, met with Cícero in 2009, when they worked together at Santa Casa de Mogi.

“Cicero was a very active guy in the Santa Casa emergency. He liked what he did and was an excellent professional, “he recalls.

The death of the friend brought a new feeling to the doctors of the municipality, especially those who are day by day on the front lines.

“We are all apprehensive, fearful, attentive. However, it is our role. We are on the front line and we have to face it in the best way ”, he says. “With his death, I think there was a greater tension between the professionals, a fear. Now, as the number of infected people increases, deaths increases, it gets closer to the family of people, “he says.

The Holy House of Mercy of Mogi das Cruzes also mourned the loss of Cícero Romão de Souza.

“The Santa Casa family expresses its condolences to his wife Mônica Mesquita, his family and all his colleagues and coworkers, at this time of mourning. And in prayer he asks that God may comfort everyone’s heart, ”said the note.

On Thursday (23), firefighters and SAMU members read a farewell letter in the courtyard of the 17th Fire Brigade (see here). With gyro flex and siren, they said goodbye to their old friend.
