Argentine President Alberto Fernández announced on Saturday night (25) that the mandatory quarantine to contain the spread of the coronavirus will continue until at least May 10. The announcement was made to journalists at the presidential residence.

During this period, there will be no relaxation of quarantine in cities with more than 500 thousand inhabitants. In the smallest, commercial activities can begin to return as long as the number of infected people is not high. In these cases, Fernández said that it is necessary “to have the commitment of the mayors that no more than 50% of the population circulates.”

“If this requirement is violated, or the city shows an increase in the number of infections, we will demand that it comply with the complete and mandatory quarantine again,” added the president.

As a result, residents of Buenos Aires and all provincial capitals and other large cities in Argentina can only leave home to buy food and medicine or for medical appointments, as already established.

Doctors, health workers, food, fuel, diplomats, politicians, and media professionals may circulate with official permission. The use of the homemade mask is mandatory on public transport, where you cannot travel on foot, and when entering markets.

The shopping malls and stores will remain closed, and there will be no flights, national or international, in principle, until September.

“I will not fall into the false dichotomy between economy and health. I prefer that a factory does not work because its employees are in quarantine than because they are sick,” said the president.

Parents were allowed to go out with young children for a short walk not to exceed 500 meters from their home.

According to government data, there are 3,780 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 185 deaths in the country.
