Galaxy S20 Plus vs Galaxy S10: how to compare different categories | Comparative

[ad_1]

With the launch of the new Galaxy S20 line this year, Samsung moved a bit in the category of every cell phone. The cheapest Galaxy S10e came out and the Galaxy S20 took the place of this device, as well as the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the replacement for the Galaxy S10 +.

So the right place for the Galaxy S20 + next to the Galaxy S10. Confusing, but that. And since we’ve already done a thousand other comparisons between these galaxies, this one is also needed to help you choose and to provide more information.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus

Samsung hasn’t profoundly changed the look of its flagships in a while. The result is that, from generation to generation, nothing radical has been done. If you already like this look, this is good news.

The changes that we can see are in the notch, which was from the corner to the center of the screen, still in the hole design (but smaller in the S20 +), and also in the rear cameras, which were in the Galaxy S10 were arranged in a horizontal strip in the center, in the S20 + they were transferred to a rectangular module in one of the corners.

The camera block of the S20 + is more outstanding, but in compensation its screen has less curves, making it easier to use. The body of both in aluminum, with Gorilla Glass as protection and also have resistance to water and dust.

They are dual SIM, but they share the second slot with the memory card, and they also share the biometrics under the screen. However, based on our tests, the S20 + reader is slower than the previous one. Because it has a smaller screen, the S10 also has a smaller, lighter body, but the newer cell phone managed to be the same thickness as the previous one. Both arrive with a USB-C connection.

They start tied for maintaining a good build.

screen

On the screen, some changes seem few, but one detail is very striking: in the Galaxy S20 Plus, as well as in its S20 Ultra version, Samsung brought the 120Hz refresh rate, a welcome novelty for the precision games they offer Support. Also, it has a larger body screen ratio.

Otherwise, the S10 has a 6.1-inch screen, compared to a 6.7-inch screen for the S20 Plus, which also goes by this name because it’s bigger. QuadHD + resolution in both, slightly higher in the S20 + to achieve a ppi close to that of the S10.

The ratio goes from 19: 9 to 20: 9, longer, there is Gorilla Glass 6 protection and a film pre-applied by Samsung on both. Both displays have HDR10 + support and are dynamic AMOLED, but the newer 2X phone, which offers better brightness than the 2019 model, performs better on the street, in the sun.

Improvements in brightness and refresh rate make the Galaxy S20 + a point.

Sound

In sound, the audio of these two smartphones is very clean, both in headphones and externally. Both are narrow and have good width and clarity, and are among the best in the class.

The headphones are the same for both, black in-ear headphones serviced by AKG, and while both are very good, the quality offered by the connection is better on the S20 +. However, the Galaxy S10 was apparently the last flagship of the company to offer the P2 connection.

They come together for the best external sound from the S20 + with the S2’s P2 connection.

System

Although there are two Samsungs, we can point out some differences here. Because it was released in 2019, the Galaxy S10 comes out of the box with Android 9 Pie, and can already be updated to Android 10. This year’s J S20 + comes with the newest version of the system and will receive Android 11)

Chances are good that the S10 will get this future update, too, but it will always be behind the newer model. Both are in OneUI 2, Samsung’s own feature-packed interface designed for big screens, making it easier on a daily basis.

And while the S10 has plenty of features, Samsung always improves from one top of the line to the other, so the S20 Plus brings more things, like in-camera AR features, pop-up conversations, and more tweaks.

In connections, it’s more a matter of decision. The S20 Plus’s USB-C is slightly newer, but both offer the most up-to-date WiFi and Bluetooth, plus ANT +, NFC and DeX mode, though they don’t have an FM radio. The Galaxy S20 Plus lost the heart rate oxygen sensors, which were only for last year’s models.

The goal of the Galaxy S20 Plus is its longest update time.

performance

If there was already controversy with the choice of processor when the S10 line was launched, this was exacerbated in this new model. Once again, Samsung brought its Exynos chipset in place of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon, which generally works better on several factors.

The S10 features the Exynos 9820 chipset, while the S20 Plus features the Exynos 990 chipset. Both have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable microSD storage. The memory of the S20 + is faster than that of its competitor.

At benchmarks, the latest cell phone ranges in numbers, reaching more than 175,000 bonus points. Recalling, in our comparison of the S20 + with the S10 +, the youngest was only 2 seconds faster than its rival. This time, our opening tests made the S20 Plus four seconds faster than the S10.

This means that the processing itself is faster, and that’s probably what addresses the issue of optimizing software and applications with hardware. In games, both work very well, and the Galaxy S10 is still a good option for those who like to play.

However, here the S20 Plus stands out for offering a 120Hz refresh rate on its screen, allowing for a smoother presentation and faster response in games that support the technology. Not many, but they are an interesting experience.

Drums

As expected, the Galaxy S20 Plus had a number update compared to the S10. We went from 3,400 mAh to 4,500 mAh, which was reflected in the size. This was reflected in a longer duration, but not as much as expected. But we also have a bigger screen.

Our tests took nearly an hour and a half more battery life and forty minutes more screen time. The S10’s 15 and a half hours is quite reasonable, and its successor’s 17 hours is a nice upgrade, but the S10 + does it even better.

The good news is that, unlike what we generally see in our comparisons, the S20 + and its larger battery also recharge faster, because they have a 25W charger in the box against a 15W charger from the S10. It is almost an hour and 15 minutes for the youngest and one hour and forty minutes for the predecessor. It is worth mentioning that the two recharge wirelessly at 15 W and recharge their backs at 9 W.

The point is with the Galaxy S20 Plus.

Cameras

The new generation of smartphones, whether from Samsung or any other major brand, should improve the camera, and this has also recently included an increase in the number of sensors. We have, in each of them:

  • Galaxy S20 Plus: 12 megapixels main width with f / 1.8 aperture, Dual Pixel PDAF and optical stabilization; 64 megapixel telephoto lens with 3x hybrid optical zoom, PDAF and optical stabilization; Ultra-wide and Super Steady 12-megapixel video and a 0.3-megapixel ToF.
  • Galaxy S10: 12 megapixels main width with variable aperture of f / 1.5-2.4, Dual Pixel PDAF and optical stabilization; 12 megapixel telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom, autofocus and optical stabilization; Ultra-wide 16 megapixel video and Super Steady.

Even with fewer sensors, the Galaxy S10 has its charms, like the variable aperture that was lost in the new generation. There are only two great smartphones for photography, and despite having a noticeable improvement, this was not radical.

Anyway, we have highlights mainly on the additional sensors. The telephoto lens achieves much more detail by having more zoom and more megapixels, while the ultra-wide lens has much less difference in light and quality compared to the main sensor. Another good improvement is in the night mode, more accurate and with more detail in the image, although it brings color distortion.

The telephoto lens, the biggest winner, and the largest number of megapixels allow you to crop the image, giving more detail to the zoom. Not as close to 100x as the Ultra model, but well above the S10 model. There are many features on the S20 Plus, mainly AR, but the famous Instagram mode on the S10 was lost.

The expected point of the Galaxy S20 Plus.

In videos, we follow the same evaluation of the cameras. Although the difference between the main sensors is not much, having more to do with the new models, additional software features and secondary sensors leave the S20 + at an advantage.

We have manual video resources, which are already a big improvement, and also maintain excellent audio capture and stabilization. It also offers the possibility of recording at 8K at 24 fps, with more details and taking up much more space.

The S10 makes 4K video at 60fps just like its successor, and its camera is also a good camcorder. But more can be done with the S20 +.

The point is then with the newest cell phone, Galaxy S20 Plus.

Finally, selfies leave the greatest unknown. Although the front two contain 10-megapixel sensors, the f / 1.8 aperture of the Galaxy S10 is better than the f / 2.2 aperture of the Galaxy S20 +. A first track is the possibility of recording in 4K at 60 fps of the newest, compared to only 30 fps of the previous one.

This is possible thanks to the new processing, which also influences the quality as a whole. The S20 Plus night mode is more efficient, although it does distort colors a lot. And thanks to that, we have more accurate selfies, with a greater dynamic range and more color details.

One more point for the Galaxy S20 Plus.

Price

Finally we have the price. In 2019, the Galaxy S10 arrived with launch prices starting at 4,999, while the Galaxy S20 Plus reached R $ 5,999, a thousand more expensive reais. Currently, those with much more acceptable prices are the S10, which depending on the promotion can cost half of its launch.

The newest already brings the increase (or not the fall) in prices that the high dollar installed, and so far the S20 + has had a discount of less than 500 reais in general. It is possible that near the end of the year, with Black Friday, we will see better promotions, but a difficult price. The S10, at the same time, should have better promotions and currently a better cost-benefit ratio.

The final point of the Galaxy S10.

Completed

This was an uphill battle for the S10. The conclusion we came to is that, as much as they insist on saying that the S20 is the successor to the Galaxy S10e and that the S10 has been replaced by the Galaxy S20 Plus, this is not the end result.

In our comparison between Plus models, the successor had already won twice as many points. This time, the difference has widened, and it’s clear that Samsung didn’t bring any new S10e in disguise, but rather raised the bar in its line with the Galaxy S20 Ultra.

It does not seem very reasonable to have doubts about these two models, since the price range is very large and the S20 Plus surpasses almost everything, only the P2 connection is missing. If you are looking for something better and not so expensive, the S10 Plus may be a better option.

And, if you want to spend even less, the S10 is one of the best options for those who want good performance at a profitable price. You can even search for a Galaxy Note 10.
